OMG! Look at the EM-1 aka the now official E-M1 Thread

is it ugly?

After reading your blog, looks like I will have to think a little harder before making the move to buy the E-M1 cos I do not have ant 4/3 lens or intending to buy one.

Thank you microcosm for your honest opinion on who need and who do not need the E-M1. Really help me a lot.

I kept my E-M5 as a companion to the E-M1. This way, while on holiday, I can have two mounted cameras ready to shoot. With a proper carrying system you can be super fast to shoot. For example, if I am at a scenic area, I might have a 7-14mm mounted on E-M5 while I have the 12-40Pro mounted on the E-M1 for quick street style shoots (with people/culture as subject focus).

If $$$ is not really a concern, then the E-M1 is a good buy. But it has its little problems (like ANY OTHER CAMERA SYSTEM). Every one has their good and bad, pros and cons. So buy what works for you. In the tests about fuzziness, blur, whatever, I don't think I can remember when was the last time I shot anything at f8 other than for macro, IS-off, and mounted on a tripod (so no IBIS issue). Most of the time, when I really need IBIS to work, it is usually lens opened WIDE and partially supported. In my believe of "real world tests", yes, that issue might be there, but also can be avoided.

I wrote on my "resurrected" new blog on tech toys, you might want to give it a read on my thoughts on the E-M1 just to give you another perspective.

ps. I am adding a third camera while on holiday, which is a Panasonic GX7, permanently with the 7-14mm mounted as only Panny bodies will correct the insanely difficult to control CA and flaring on the 7-14mm. So it looks like the E-M1 will have the 12-40Pro mounted and the E-M5 with either the 35-100mm or 100-300mm mounted for non-discreet street shooting. As you might have realised by now, I don't believe in primes. So we have a varying style of shooting and therefore my comments only serve as a different perspective to what you might find helpful.

It might seem I carry a lot of gear, but all of them are packed into a Pelican case and while holiday they sit secured in the rented vehicle. So while on holiday I only pull out what I need at location, and not to mention in some countries, rest areas are hard to find and the Pelican case makes a fantastic stool while the others are "suffering"... ^_^

Happy shooting and I hope I have given you a different perspective on my set up and help you with your purchase decision.

quite a breath of fresh air to read the views given by u. I do agree that the EM-1 is really a wonder but few peoeple do realize that it isn't for everyone hence i'm still sticking to my decision to not get it. Its just.. out of my league ;) But the 12-40 though, i've been poisoned sufficiently to want to get it. -.-

But if you already own the PL12-35mm, wouldn't that be a waste of money?

Anyway, another two more OM-Ds are in the works. Not one, but two. Don't even ask me how I know.

I find that the lens IS really sucks big time! Not just on 35-100 but other lenses too!

i sold it X_X , haha. No point keeping both the 12-35 and 12-40 and out of the two, my personal guts go towards the 12-40 more.

So just settle that itch and going for it. That's it.

Looks like the gear-mosquito just bit you.

But then again, it is a good investment.

Photo story - it's super duper fun to use!!

Jus came back from a Funan hunt... no one selling the dekitted lens.. my old-time shop also no stocks.

hiah.. HongKong liao la. I give up for local one le. Local release date is too long for me to wait liao.

Thanks for your fast reply.

I have not intention to sell my E-M5 but mainly because the low re-sale price means keeping it make more sense to me. I actually like the E-P5 a lot except for the EVF adds to the overall height.

Will read your blog for more details. Thanks again.

If you're going for more portability, I feel that the em1 may not suit u... Besides, IQ is not very different between the ep5 n em1.. and if I'm not wrong, the em1 actually weighs more than the ep5..

Personally I've bought the em1 despite owning the em5 cause I was selling my 60D so the em1 would be just in time to replace my 60D for the simple assignments that I have... In my own time, I prefer the em5 but can't seem to point a proper reason at it..

Hong Kong selling like hot cakes too. No chance until after Chinese New Year. Most of the shops now have no stock. You better call in advance so that your regular dealer can put in an order and queue for it.

yup, just placed my order & waiting for the 12-40 to 'fly' over.
I'm grateful Oly provides international warranty.

DXOMark made a comparison between both the 12-40 and 12-35. Seems that both companies optimised their lenses for different ends. Panasonic is stronger at the longer focal length while the Olympus is stronger at the wide end. Ultimately, both are good, and the Panasonic is strong all around at f4.

Thanks for head-up! I would keep 12-35mm but would hoot 12-40mm on next year at B n S section if the price is good.cos I have two omd Em-5.

"Need" is better than "Want". Cos 12-40mm would be useful for my second omd em5.
Anyway, it is good to hear from you again, wonglp.
