OMD & Panny 100-300

Thanks for this thread. The 100-300 seems to be smaller than reality on the OMD. The 100-400 is totally out of the league in terms of size.

M43 got it right with the lens size while Sony got it right with the body.

That's a BIG why I bought 100-300mm lens for its size plus OIS.

The 100-300 has motion blur

Whatever you see, its not motion blur. OIS and IBIS are off. It's mounted on a huge heavy video tripod and all shots were taken with the 2 second self timer.

The 100-300 definitely works well with the OMD. Here is a handheld shot of a dove I took this afternoon off someone's rooftop, lightly cropped of a JPEG. IBIS was on and OIS was off

Wah Liew... This is so.... Nice!!!

I got the sense that there were lingering doubts about whether or not Panasonic's OIS works on the OMD, so I made a video while turning the switch on and off. OMD IBIS was switched off when this was recorded. The lens was at about 300mm

Great work!! So clearly OIS works!! So question is does havig IBIS on affect OIS? Some people think it does not altho manual states that we shd not hv both on.

The EVF is unstable when both IBIS n OIS are on. The image becomes jerky, making it hard to lock focus on the precise focus spot. For that reason alone I wld turn off either one.

But yes, OIS clearly works on oly bodies like omd. This was my experience too.

On the OMD, you can decide if you want the EVF stabilized when you half press the shutter button. If enabled, the viewfinder will be jerky when you half press and both are on. If it is disabled then you will have OIS stabilizing the viewfinder when you are composing and either IBIS or OIS when you actually shoot.

A few more from today using the 100-300. They are up to ISO 2500 and OMD can do this with very little noise because of the great sensor. These are out of camera JPEGs. Completely unsharpened and uncropped.

Some chickens I encountered. All at ISO 800

Just a quick update on this thread. The source of the idea that OIS did not work on the OMD, a chap with the nick "Ken W" on dpreview, now reports that it has magically started to work on his OMD. No wonder so many people were confused earlier. I couldn't understand it because it always worked fine for me and is not perceptibly any worse than the much touted 5-axis IBIS. He has updated several threads where he did extensive tests to prove that it didn't work earlier. Here is a link to one of the threads and look for Ken W's post near the end:

Hi, trying to decide. My perspective of the choices (putting cost aside):

Oly is wider, sharper and lighter.

Panny is brighter (and not as wide).

Bros with experience - is the half stop brighter really makes a lot of difference in reality? If not, I am thinking of getting the Oly.

Appreciate any opinion. Thanks.

I had the same predicament; got the Oly over the Panasonc. I like silver :).

I'm a Panny user so you can take this with a grain of salt. Oly is wider and lighter. I don't think it is sharper at 300mm, which is where I use this type of lens mianly. Both lenses are dim 600mm EFL lenses so any bit of extra light you can get helps. The main thing which will help either lens is to get an OMD, which can shoot at high ISO without much noise.

Actually the oly is sharper at 300mm compared to the oly. There is some website that did the comparisons.

I remember reading some reviews and the general idea is that both lenses are pretty equal, with the usual pros and cons, just in different areas.

Hi, Hacker, tsammyc and Oly5050 - thanks very much for the sharing. I happened to checked with SLRR this afternoon and there is no stock for the Oly but now, after reading the two reviews:

Panasonic Lumix G Vario 100-300mm f/4.0-5.6 Zoom Lens Review
Olympus M.ZUIKO ED 75-300mm f/4.8-6.7 Lens Review

I am thinking of the Panny now as I loose only the 75-100 range (I can make up with the digital tele-converter function of the OM-D if I really need to) but gained in brightness and lower cost. I was really gunning for the Oly but these two reports (I take it as done similiarly) point more to the Panny.

This choice so difficult to make. Anyone think I am making a mistake to go for the Panny please yell hor - can only to buy it once! Many thanks.
