I have the FA43ltd.
Also have the DA40XS (but I only have 2 lenses w/o aperture ring, so I'm too cheap to buy an adapter for it) :D

My advise is to get the A7 (non R)
The shutter is more quiet and response is faster.
I am already having small PC issues when juggling the 24mp files (don't have a good pc so YMMV).
36mp is attractive, but to what end?
I don't want to handle 36mp of repeated takes of my kids running around.
Those who want sharp sharp and only sharp, the Sigma DPxm series cameras offer much more of that for less cost and size.

To me, the FA31ltd is unique to Pentax.
A wide angle that has a fast f1.8 aperture and very small for what it is (the diameter of perhaps an EF50/1.8 (52mm) but longer by 1").
Very often the size of another makes 35mm f2 (and its a WA 31mm not 35mm)
Smooth bokeh (not a given on a WA) and sharp from wide open.

Good thing is that now there is no need for any destructive conversion to use it on an A7.
 

A7 with the Pentax M85/2

Another lens that I like a lot.
Very small for a 85mm.
Its about the size of 50mm f1.4 (and may actually be smaller than some makes)
Very handy as a 'just in case I need a fast short tele' lens w/o being over encumbering with larger/heavier f1.4 85mm's

The impressive thing (and one of the thing that convinced me to buy an A7) is the very fast EVF refresh and response to shutter release.
Older MILCs, I'd be looking at something that happened a split second ago (and miss the moving shot)

I am undecided and will wait for a couple of months. Yeah, you may have to upgrade your PC. Mine is a 64 bit with 16 gig of ram.

The photos with the FA 31 ltd reminded me of my K5 days. It's about the best Pentax lens and is how old, the design? All the M lenses are pretty small. My cheapo, the M 200f4 can also take wonderful photos on NEX. Thanks for the wonderful photos.

Its part of the Pentax design philosophy to keep the lenses small.
I guess it was partly driven by a need to show off SLRs as a worthy alternative to RF cameras which pre-date SLRs (since Pentax was the Japanese pioneer for Jap SLRs)
The other manufacturer that does small lenses would be Olympus. (perhaps I will explore that in the future)


I was never too chummy with the FA31 ltd on aps-c and put off buying it for a long time.
Mainly because a lot of this price was for the difficulty to make a FF 31mm f1.8 (and its build quality of course)
This was wasted on aps-c (becoming an expensive 50mm eq)
I already had a very good FA35/2
Of course the FA31ltd is better in T-stop, f-stop, bokeh and FOV, but the FA35 is no slouch.

But now on FF, I think its even better and its worth every cent for the lens.

Took a big risk using the A7 for a friend's pre-wedding shoot, 2nd day after purchase. :sweat:
(I did have a backup cam though)

I did encounter the internal reflection issue with my adapter. (fixed it later with gaffer tape)
Luckily, it was not for every shot.

Don't know which level is high and what is safe level since I'm not an expert :dunno: Just don't eyeball those radioactive lenses up close ;)
