Old/alternate lenses, adapters, and lens mount conversions.

Thoth, Oceanpriest, thanks for you replies.

Hmm... I guess there aren't too many who know of this thread or have much interest in old/non-mainstream lenses.
I got a pretty good number of insights over at another forum and I think I learned quite a bit.

Ok... now sample set No.2

#3

#4

For Set1
I'm undecided (a reason for this blind test as well).
There are some things going for #1 like smoother bokeh and sharper falloff from focus to OOF parts.
However #2 has a bit deeper color/contrast on the focus part and no CA (at least in the shot)

For Set2, I think its the bit longer FL of the lens for #4 that makes the lone leaf only partly in focus compared to the sample #3.
Interesting to me then that shallower DOF does not always mean better shot if the DOF is not enough to envelope the subject. (almost a religion in a FF argument)
I do like the shallower DOF and rendering of #4 though.
Too bad I did not step back when shooting #4 to get back the same DOF. (something to note)
For me, same as Set1, I like a bit of both, 50/50 in fact. (just can't make up my mind, which is a reason why I posted this blind test)

I prefer #4. The leaf seemed 3D-ier to me. N d Bokeh seemed not so harsh. Just my 2 cents worth. Cheers.

Thanks for you inputs.
No right or wrong answer, my finding over at the other forum was really that it was down to individual preference and each person seemed to home in on various aspects.
The 3x value lens tipped over the cheaper lens though.
In fact some seem to notice subtle details I've never noticed at all and I've learn a bit about looking for them next time.

#1, #3 was the Rollei 50/1.8 HFT T* (made in Singapore)
#2, #4 was the Super Takumar 55/1.8

Iman, very uncanny eye to be able to tell it was the Rollei
You can claim 1 kopi from me next outing :D

Cheers

Too bad I only managed to get to this wedding late in the day when the light was going down fast.
I think either the bride or groom was Indonesian.
They had Javanese music, dancers and mediums performing into the night.

I also have this lens, the 710gm version. I use it on my Nex system with focus peaking, very effective. What cam do you use it on?

I use it on my Nex-5N :)

Moon shot w a 2X teleconverter

I use it with a tripod ... the lens condition is good, though the filter ring is slightly dented... not sure if I can fix a UV filter on :(

Something from the Rollei HFT 50/1.8.
Converted to M42 mount by a Taiwanese seller.
My thanks to MWP for organizing the purchase.

I'm still trying to familiarize with the lens.
But I seem to be noticing that its got 'something' when I used it stopped down at f2.8.
The lens goes from f1.8 to f2.8 though, not to 2 or 2.5 as some lenses do.
Could do with the extra stops in between.

I also use it on my Nex 5N with EVF. Mine is in perfect condition except some minor scratches externally. 450mm FOV with less than 1 kg for both cam and lens.

My brother-in-law just passed me an old Rollei mount Voightlander SLR VSL 3-E with the 50f1.8 and 35f2.8. Externally, all look good but need to get system repaired. Both lenses still look new. Will look for a Rollei to NEX adapter to test out both lenses.

i have a samyang 85mm nikon mount, can recommend a good adapter to use on my nex 5r camera.

Also is there an adapter that can handle g and non-g lenses?

thanks

You might as well go all out and get a speed booster adapter than converts it to near FF FOV on the NEX.
Eg.
Focal Reducer Speed Booster Adapter Lens Turbo Nikon F AI AIS to Sony NEX 5N 6 7 | eBay

Otherwise, any Nikon to NEX adapter than supports G lenses will work with G/non-G lenses.
The adapter has an aperture ring for the G lenses which don't have one.
When using non-G lenses, since they have an aperture ring, just turn that instead of the one on the adapter.
Eg.
Nikon AI AF s G Lens to Sony NEX 3 NEX5 E Mount Adapter | eBay

Pls do further research on which specific brand of such adapters is better.
I'm not a NEX user, so I can't help you on more info.

Giving this thread a bump.

Takumar 100/2

Some new info suggest that the lens was made for only a year and had only 2 months on the market, which may explain its rarity.

Takumar 135/2.5 ver1

Most ppl give up the ver1 for ver2 when they get one.
I just find ver1 to have its own character worth keeping on its own.
Not as strong in contrast and not as strong in drawing.

Man, those taks are sharp.
