i wonder if the Minolta 24-105mm f3.5-4.5 can perform well, with the LA-EA4 of course. pretty cheap at ebay for around us$300 with shipping. could be a good alternative while waiting for the zeiss 24-70 f4, or if budget does not allow. has anyone tried it yet? if so please provide some feedback.

get it if it any cheaper, it decently sharper than any of the 1.2 lens here

There is a critical difference on why people are using adapters with legacy lenses - it should be creating flexibility for users of legacy lenses to use their lenses on a A7/R if they wish to. But not that they have to.

Building such a good machine mainly to be used with other brand lenses of other company is just not ideal for Sony. There is a big market of users just using AF and do not wish to add on adapters to increase the bulk, which is the main selling point of this, or most of them will just grab a D800E which is better in most functionality and with better choice of lenses.

This is discounting the fact that many legacy lenses still have issues (be it how minor it is) such as vignetting, magenta casting, etc. and kind of defeating the purpose of having a superb 36mp sensor on the A7R with not many lenses capable of optimising its resolution.

Hear hear ............

If you don't have to get a 50-55mm focal length, the 35FE is a wonderful AF lens made for optimising A7R resolution.

Though it is a F2.8, but using a 35mm F2.8 is sufficient for most occasions such as street, events, family, etc.

There is 1-2 copies at Funan when I was there yesterday...

I only bought the camera on launch day because they said the FE55 was coming mid dec.. Getting a little sick of having to manual focus every single shot!

Did you manage to get a set with international warranty?

The chaotic situation in Thailand doesn't really help in expediting production of the FE55... Seem to be facing a supply crunch, even in Japan there are only very limited sets available for purchase...

I agree that the 35mm is a very nice lens too! Good for "everyday" photos. Probably get one as well as the 55mm.

Yes, keep the tourist warranty. Sony Centre will recognise it, along with the original receipt for servicing under warranty.

Tourist warranty. International bo?

Great. Tks.

thanks for tbe input. might very well do just that, now just deciding which cam to go for first.

If can afford, go straight to A7R. Image quality of A7R is very close to D800E, with superb resolution that A7 can't see. No need to upgrade again later which loses more. Check out how many A7 on sale in BNS.

Even if using a cropped lens, it will still be able to give you very detailed photos.

Shutter sound is over emphasized.

if you are thinking of doing videos, keep in mind the moire and anti aliasing on the A7R.

Not to say the A7 doesn't... just more prominent on the A7R cos of the lack of filter.

Actually, A7R is better than A7 for video. Many thought higher pixel count of A7R will have more noise, but apparently the sensor of the A7R is more superior and has much better video. If budget is not a concern and if you don't need faster Phase Detection, A7R is a much much better camera.

If buying a A7, I would just use a RX1-R with no AA filter. Matched 35mm F2 Zeiss lens to a superb sensor.

very likely going for the a7r, just hope the shutter sound is not as bad as that on my former A850, which was really loud and sounded like it was falling apart.

Depends on what you are looking for.

IMO, other than the 36mp sensor, the A7r got more issues.
1. Not any better for adapted lenses (in fact often worse); and its hard to avoid adapted lens use for quite a while.
2. Unforgiving on technique to make use of 36mp resolution
3. Unforgiving on lenses (CA, poor edges all get accentuated)
4. No EFC shutter (for faster response shooting);
5. Slower flash sync
6. What is sane for most purposes? (viewing, printing)

Imagine, you run around shooting your kid.
Lots of bad shots for sure.
All 36mp each to vet through.

Think again about street/candids
They don't need to be 36mp for large prints in most cases.
Neither does the dynamism and moving subjects allow 100% pixel viewing perfection all the time.

How big are you printing/viewing anyway?

Get a good quality lens to make use of the 36mp, they are often big and puts you back to square one wrt size of system.

Of course with 36mp, you can work with a downsampling workflow to mitigate the less than perfect technique or realities of subject movement.
You also get more mp to crop and more mp to throw away to mitigate noise.

All are practical considerations.
My few cents.

Oh yes... Slower flash sync...

I am already getting a little annoyed with the A7 1/250... In practice, I could only achieve 1/200 with a third party flash...

Maybe Sony wants us to spend more money on ND filters... Lol..
