Official Sony A7 or A7r discussion thread

Would like to share my thoughts on the A7 after playing around with it for an evening. I'm upgrading from an NEX-7.

Firstly, I like the size and the layout. Lots of custom buttons is nice.

Second, dials are a lot stiffer to move than the NEX-7. Probably need to get used to this.

Third, low light performance is really good. Based on my very brief comparison, I feel A7 ISO6400 pics are quite comparable to NEX7 ISO1600 pics

Next, AF is seriously fast compared to the NEX7. Folks upgrading from NEX5R/5T/6 might not feel much difference. Note, I'm guessing here.

In addition, I miss the pop out flash. I bounced the NEX7 flash occasionally. Going to miss that.

The damn hotshoe plug is very tight. Nearly broke a fingernail trying to get it out. Actually I'm a little concern about the reliability of those tiny leaf connectors in the hotshoe. Guess only time will tell.

Still not used to the fact the SDCard slot is not with the battery. Keep opening wrong door.

Weather seal is a nice feature. Will give some assurances in bad weather.

Miss the rapid fire shutter speed of the NEX7. The A7 feels clunky.

I did try the A7 with my Zeiss 24mm. Wow. Low light is FANTASTIC at f1.8.

Initially I was totally pissed that Sony didn't include an external battery charger. Now that I realize that you can charge the camera via USB, I'm ok with it. Not to mention, with the QM1 charger, you can charge one battery externally and one in body. Closest you'll get to a dual battery charger.

Lastly, I like the new menu system. Thou I miss the inbuilt help. Maybe I need to read the manual.

should said yr summilux is a beast with A7:bsmilie:

Imagine the lux 50 asph on the A7R with 36MP and no AA filter... LOL:bsmilie:

Will I even wanna carry this chunk out n shoot? Kudos to Zeiss to produce this almost perfect lens but given the choice, I would rather buy the Summilux 50mm f/1.4 ASPH with the same kind of money. Ease of shooting is more important for me as the IQ difference isnt very much in the first place between them.

well, i got y A7r but i also feel it's a white elephant now. all i can do is stare at it because since i changed systems, i do not currently own any NEX or Alpha lenses and there is totally no stock for any FE lens in Singapore. I called every shop, called sony directly, all no stock. new stocks no idea and most likely in the end dec shipment.
So, i have the body with nothing to shoot it with. I think Sony Singapore made a big mistake by releasing a camera without a kit option and yet not have lenses available to buy.
Ultimately, i went online to order the 35mm from the US who had stock. Pay little more, but at least in 2 days i will be able to start using the camera.

Big thumbs down for Sony's idea of a launch.
Why did you buy it without a lens? I would have waited till you can get the lens locally. The body will become cheaper with every week anyway. How much is the lens after customs?

Can understand how u feel.

U ordered from which website? 2 days is certainly a fast shipping. Are Sony lens warranty worldwide ?

Hope the next 55mm lens launch will be handle better.

Haha so far the Ms color seems to be a nice place to give our money to... Compared to pseudo sony shops

As long as you don't have a bad experience with them. You can have good experiences with any shop.

True.... By the way, those bro that haven't got the extra battery. Please do. This baby drinks juice like nobody business

haaa... sorry didnt see this last night, went to bed alrdy! ya... no choice have to press one more button to magnify... i also miss the way it was implemented on the nex although i don't use it that often.

the focus peaking works well enough with the EVF.

I might sound stupid but can check wif u. I set C1 button as Magnifier Focus assist. But when I press d button, it shows me a small box n I haf to press again on C1 to magnify it.

Its a stupid additional step. Can any bro assist n advise on how to enable one press on C1 and immediately magnify for manual focus during peaking mode? Thanks. M using adapted lenses on d A7.
