Official Sony A7 or A7r discussion thread (Season II)

I am feeling "meh" with the lens lineup Sony released yesterday...

I was thinking why Sony never develop something similar to the canon DO lenses. Special glass and lens design for telephoto yet keeping the size compact. That should be the way to go for mirrorless.

Telephoto lenses are not Sony or Zeiss forte?
Canon and Nikon have been in this "sports" range for a long time.

I just wished there was a 85mm instead of another 35mm.

Repeat iterations of the same focal length is really "meh".

I would rather they don't release anything and put all their effort into other focal ranges.

Who is getting this??? :P

the problem with the cheaper ones is not sure can use the shutter release when camera is mounted vertically.

cause' i see the design really do not leave much room for the wire.

eh still can . just mount the plate halfway. let me do a test

The side ports can be fully opened with the L plate, allowing u to use wired trigger or whatnot. But if u mount the camera vertically to tripod, u will of course block the side ports, let alone use any wired release.

ya, that is precisely the problem.

if i buy the L-plate and i cannot mount the camera vertically, then it defeats the purpose of having the L-plate liao.

looks like the RRS is the only choice.

here is a photo for reference:

Well, I'd rather give up this functionality and go the wifi/IR remote control route and have a L plate that looks more streamlined with the camera body, and save more than just a few dollars, but that's just personal preferences.

I buy the L-plate for its functionality and not for aesthetic purposes. If I cannot use it vertically, then a normal qr plate is the prudent choice.

I prefer using wired remote as it minimises the lapse in control which is common with wireless connections.

Was about to order the Neewer L-plate.. Wanna join?

I am using the China-made L-plate and a free Android app for IR remote control (no extra accessory to carry). So far, it's been quite reliable. Just remember to point your phone at the IR receiver at the front of the camera (near the power on/off button) when the trigger is going to happen.

Just got my A7, and after looking around the forum I found a lot of great photos using the A7 together with fast manual lenses. Now I want to try as well! Any recommendations? Looking for something "affordable", nothing beyond $800 I guess.
