Official Sony A7 or A7r discussion thread (Season II)

Might be a replacement of the VG e-mount series or a lower mp speed demon with a ruggedised design since the rumour source mentioned not replacing a7/r.
got a feeling its gonna be a replacement though, the top tier nex5 was replaced by 5n&7 and released at slightly over a year...Wish they focus more on optics instead of new body =(
At this rate, my 28mm prime might never see light.

Yea.new FF Mirrorless with A6k AF system..A9r maybe? Although they did say it's not an A7R replacement..i can't see how a camera like that can be worse than the A7r..I'm guessing it'll be a higher end camera than the a7..maybe the a9r everyone was talking about
Either way, i can't wait...looks like the a7r won't even make it to it's first birthday before it gets replaced

Sony is like Samsung now..they release phone like nobody business..Sony is doing the same with it's cameras...one after another..the NEX series was confusing enough...now the Alpha series they are doing the same..blur..

Nowadays all manufacturers are doing the same thing..... for lower tier cameras I dont mind, most ppl who buy these cameras are non enthusiast anywayz. And even if hobbyists like us get them, it'll most prob serve as a backup camera nia.

But to do this on their higher end stuffs is............ time frame like the older alphas cameras are just nice. 1 1/2 to 2 years for a replacement sounds good.

WOW, you got an amazing deal on the A7r in australia! Yes, Singapore is the most expensive city now didn't you know :) haha..so cameras will naturally be expensive also and we can't claim GST..
Time to do up a shopping list while i go to the UK next...clam the VAT..save alot..not camera related but i bought a Brompton bicycle from London last year at SGD1.2k cheaper than if i were to buy it here...i just checked it in and carried it home!

My alpha stuff, A850, 16-35 (sold) and 70-400G and RX100 have all been purchased overseas. I am changing from the alpha to the E mount as I can use both my M and R lenses.

In my own testing, A7R vs M240, the A7R out resolves the M240 and at around 25% of the M240's price, it is a bargain. There are issues with wide angle rf lenses, but my WATE, 35mm 'Cron pre-asph and R lenses seemed to work well. My first FE lens will be the 55mm f1.8.

U wun be disappointed with the FE 55 if u r into clinical rendering with superb sharpness and smooth bokeh.

Good evening fellow a7/r owners. A while back i posted a find that i thought was useful as a handy tool, the Sony GP-VPT1 "shooting grip" mini tripod. Well this has proved to be a more than just a toy. Apparently it was able to support the weight of even the kit zoom when mounted all the way back. If you're currently using a small vintage prime or a prime without oss, this will definitely be a great acquisition if you're shooting short clips every now and then while you're on a day trip.

The record button is well placed and easily accessible as opposed to the small little one on the a7/r body itself. The photo button acts as a shutter release that allows for "half press" for af. With one hand on the grip and one on the lens , its easy to switch between "movie" and "photos" with both buttons sitting next to each other. Should u need digital zoom/clear image zoom on primes, the rocker switch in the middle works as well. this grip Doubles as a shutter release for bulb mode too should u not have a IR remote.

Those looking for a table tripod, this does not disappoint. Great as a compact solution for bar gigs or even vlogging. I've got a rode stereo videomic pro , a kit zoom , added weight of the gariz halfcase on the a7r and it took it pretty well. Lateral up down adjustments are possible , i mounted the camera as far back as possible to to give it a better overall balance.

This works with sony alpha /cybershot series of cameras such as the a7/r , nex , rx100 etc and even sony camcorders. For what it does i just thought it should recieve a little more attention =)

thanks for sharing m3vapour. may we know what's the cost of this gadget? being Sony it's probably not gonna be cheap, but it sure looks handy.

I do have a 50 Cron in R mount. This works well with my M240, but the A7R which has a better evf is so much easier. Wide open this lens has a softer and lower contrast rendition. With the FE55, I might not have to buy the 50 Lux. If future FE lenses are as good as the FE55, I might be tempted to switch!

I foresee a future u haf wif FE lenses.

After today, i really wish Sony had released a better AF FF mirrorless camera... maybe this rumoured A9 should be released faster than Sept :)
As much as I love my A7r and forgive it's misfortunes, for the first time i was truely frustrated using it today.
I was shooting a fire performance a iLight today with the a7r and fe55..it was dark and the performers moved alot..and even at f1.8 and ISO2500, the camera 80% of the time, fails to focus at all and becuase it's at f1.8, by the time it does, the person moved a little..OOF again..It simply didn't work most of the time. I know it's bad in low light but i never expected it to be THIS bad. The only other time i got this frustrated was with the EOS M in low light as well..the A7R is no different.

hehe just not too long ago you said this.

the way to look at the a7r is how you would look at a Medium format camera.the selling point is iq and dr..same as medium format. it was not made to replace a professional dslr. if you're hoping for it to replace an a99..then you're lookibg at it wrongly. it's slow and requires patience..so does a medium format. if you tell yourself that you'll love the a7r..if you're hoping it will af fast..track well..then this is not the camera for you..you won't pay 50k for a hassalblad and expect it to track well...

Yes i know...i still love the camera..it was just frustrating in low light and i dont have anything else to use in low light..that's why i'm just wishing an improved version will be out soon...it wouldn't be so bad if i still had my 5d3 or anything else that would be better in low light then i would bring that out to iLight..but this is the only camera i own now..so no choice...my nex6 also won't be any better anyways...only consolation is to get the a6k for such shoots in the future...the a7r will stay home when night falls :)
