Official Sony A7 or A7r discussion thread (Season II)

Hi Bro Albertri,

Yours does not look like light leak. Seems like sensor noise.

Try checking your setting on NR (noise reduction) and set to ON under long exposure.

yeah tested my self also there's some light leaks... I've covered the front of the lens with my leather skin camera cover and shoot at ISO 12500 and 25000 yes can see some leakage but I think this will cause an issue when you shooting at bright day light and shooting with long exposure??? what I did was make sure the morning sun rays from my window will hit the cam and the contact between lens and lens mount and here's what I got

Don't own a A7 but honestly who's gonna be really shooting at ISO25600 or jamming an LED into a camera body for long exposures in real life ? Leave this to those people who spend most of their time reading charts instead of enjoying the cameras :) It's honorable of Sony to acknowledge the issue but then the issue isn't a real life impactful one. If Sony does anything as compensation, it's a bonus rather than a must have.

Yeah truly agree bro.

The point of the test is not to say in real life people shoot at 25600 wth a led light pointing at lens bla bla bla... It's to cover all range of settings at the extreme end and know where the issues or when the issues will occur so u can isolate them in real life. Also to prove that this problem does not exists for certain owners even at the extreme range which is good to know . The true purpose of testing at 25600 will be mentioned below and perhaps u will see how relevant it is.
This problem does not exists for all owners and i dont see a problem in users finding out if their systems suffer from such. People ask about it on the forums and thus other forumers contribute. Not everyone's a sheep (no pun intended =p) and speculate all the time, they want answers. This is a forum and people share and contribute knowledge and viewpoints to an existing problem , i dont think u should judge those as chart readers. For all u know, they might be clocking more mileage on their cameras and enjoying their cameras as much or more than you do.

The test was designed by a forumer on sony community and this was his answer for people who replied like you did :

"if you shoot like I do, and thousands of other photographers that do daytime long exposure photography (e.g., Joel Tjintjelaar: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tjintjelaar/), then you absolutely will want to make sure your copy doesn't have this issue."

"The 25,600 ISO test was designed by me simply as a way to easily, and quickly test for small amounts of light leaks without the equipment (ND filters) and/or time (up to 10-20 minutes) to do a "proper" test. If you have the time and wherewithal, by all means, stack 16+ stops worth of ND filters, go outside, and shoot in daylight for longer than 3 minutes at ISO 50. Like I did (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/131577/forums/FB%20Samples/DSC02723.jpg)."

Well actually the f stop doesn't matter since the light leak happened at the mount and not from the lens. Setting it at ISO25600 is just to better justify the known issue.

I believe most people here won't be affected by it. But then again, it is a poor QC by Sony standard and when you are paying such a high price for a electronic product, you should not have these kind of issues.

Since Sony has acknowledged the issue, hopefully they will come out with a solution that will satisfy all party affected.

closing up the aperture at f22 during the test is to minimise the the chances of light coming in via the lens when lens cap is on so isolate the problem to just the lens mount itself.
i totally agree with your point on Qc =)

Cheers

Point noted :) I could have been more gentle in my choice of words. Apologies , was kinda worried that some users might end up dumping their cameras at first note of this and wanted to highlight the importance of having a balance between knowledge (of the leak in this case) and that yes , QC could've been better but also note the conditions at which the issue occurred.

Thanks for clarifying further.

Well, other people paid more for a d600 that has more problems than light leaks. Took them long enough to address the problems. If sony is going to provide free repair/replacement of the mount or whatever (which shouldnt be more expensive than a shutter assembly I guess?) Some time soon, that would be gd.

I didn't find your statement offending it's true who would shoot 30sc at ISO 25600?

Sorry if my photographic know how is limited but I do agree this issue is not impacting to maybe 99% of A7/r users

This is what i mean when i mentioned earlier that sony's camera faults are always heavily scrutinized and blown outta proportion.
As shown below when same tests are performed. 5dmkIII and d800E both got same "issue" and no one seem to dig at or scrutinize those lol. Time to put this discussion to rest until there're any official updates (if there's gonna be any)

Sony will at best do a 5DM3 .. Free inspection for "concerned customers" like they did for mine some years back. Some of my frens doing long exposure star trail with the a7r /a7 didn't have any issue with their shots too. No big deal at least for me.

because "Its a Sony" :-)

When Canon or Nikon have any issues, no one bats an eye. When Sony has any issues, everybody loses their minds.

ha not necessarily. there was plenty of hoo ha with the canon 5D3 top lcd panel lightleak "issue". same as A7. only visible with long exposures with lens cap on and iso 25600 kekeke.... early batch at least, and canon offered to fix the problem.

nikon d600 plenty of complaints on oil/dust on sensor n now they finally are swapping shutter mechanisms to solve the prob.

d800/e with its side focusing accuracy, also lots and lots of complaints.

just that you guys dont see the complaints if you are not invested in that system when sh!t happens

IIRC some one did a tear down of a "fixed" 5D3 and discovered that the solutionwas just black or duct tape over the leak.

yes hehe. with the 5d3 the leak was from the top LCD panel led. hence black tape internally is a logical fix

Hi, This is my first post here and would like to ask your help / opinions. I just purchased a sony a7r from click! (funan) and also the a mount adapter and the zeiss 55mm. I have 3 sigma lenses: 12-24, 24-70 and 70-200 (this is actually tamron). Somehow, i'm not particularly happy with the a7r and seriously thinking of returning it back and purchasing an a99. I'm seeing focus issues even with the 55mm, so i don't think it would be the adapters issue and generally i more or less have a feeling that this is a very expensive toy, not a professional stuff. The light metering is way out, the white balance is okayish and the focus is just totally not there. Focus tracking is useless as it track, though when you view the image in 100% you can see that its quite far from sharp and to be honest the only feature what works fine is the manual focusing. Is it only me? Did i get a faulty copy? What is Your opinion? I guess after spending 5k on this package it not too much to ask for basic functionalities to work right?

Is this your first full frame camera?

I think he didn't check the A7/r short coming before getting it. It seems he needs A7 based on what he mentioned. A7r was not design as fast as A7.

I am using A7r with laea4 and some amount lenses it's not very fast specially at Low light or low contrast even if your focus point is the center one. Tracking also is not that fast and I doubt you can use it for fast moving even for kids at play.

Anyone knowz where can I get accessories for A7 such as the casing for it?

I dont mind cheaper alternatives as well if it's reasonably good :)
