Official Sony A7 or A7r discussion thread (Season II)

Wanna check with owners here. A7r worth the upgrade over a7?

i think there's one benefit of the a7r that people are not mentioning. Maybe they don't see it as a benefit but i do.
The APSC mode...on the a7, shooting in APSC mode gives you only a 9mp image..on the a7r, it gives you 15mp. And 15mp is almost like another nex6 camera. In fact, as tests proved, it's actually better quality than the nex6

And why is this good? Well, you can use the NEX lenses with it and still get 15mp images. And why would you want to? Well, because some NEX lenses are pretty good...like the SEL50F18 or even the 18200 which is fantastic for travelling.
Another reason, is if you use the LA-EA4 adapter and decide to use A mount lenses..especially the telephoto ones, you CAN enable the APSC mode and get 1.5x the range and still get good 15mp images.
For example, you can use the 70-300 lens and get 450mm at f5.6 and that looks pretty good on the a7r..
So to me, this is a VERY good benefit of the a7r over the a7 and i use this feature quite a fair bit.

Conclusion:

DON'T UPGRADE. GO STRAIGHT TO BUY THE A7R.

yep that's what I did now, I learn it the hard way I buy A33 over A55 not saying A33 was bad but A55 was better and handles the noise much better also :-) So when I jump to E-Mount I took the NEX-7 and now A7r no regrets since then :-)

But all of the points A7 vs A7r still up to you to decide what you want base on your budget and base on what you need...

Yeah...
Best method

I heard it from a Canon shooter friend she told me yep "SHE" why buy the lower end if you can afford get the high end. Coz if you get the low end you will be tempted to upgrade and in the end it will cost you more than just buying the high end straight.

Good move. Same lesson learnt for me!

Most people go into A7/R for the image quality. If going for faster AF, there are m43 like OMD that is lightning fast.

So if image quality is key, I don't see why going for A7, then regret and sell at a huge loss, to then buy a A7R. More expensive than going straight to A7R.

Did I mention that the Image Quality from A7R is MUCH better than A7?

Shutter sound of A7R is louder than A7. The image quality is LOUDER to shout about too!

Whoever shouts LOUDER wins hor? Haha.

I have both the A7 and A7R.

Image quality on the A7R is better but not that much better la.

Infact I get sharper images on my A7.

Maybe I'm an old man and more prone to camera shake but I only use my A7R for stills works and rest of time the A7 does it for me.

Yeap. When the shutter closes with a nice solid sound (slightly louder than A7), you review the photo on LCD monitor. And you smile with a sense of satisfaction.

Superb resolutions. Extraordinary ISO performance. Super sharp images with creamy melting background blur - known as bokeh. Especially with 55FE.

And then, you look forward to the next opportunity to snap another photo. For another solid shutter click, and you realised that it is no longer LOUD.

Hahaha....

Really??? By how MUCH??? Haha... :bsmilie:

Aiyah.. forgot my maths liao. I think it is 36/24 = 1.5x better.

Haha....

Anyway, as long as the users are happy with his tools, be it Nex 16mpx, A7 24mpx, A7R 36mpx or the rumoured A9R 54mpx... some with AA filter some without AA Filter... some say without AA filter sharper, but some also have interesting finding that with AA filter sharper...

Just be happy with what you have. A7R may not fit every users - higher price, no phase detection AF, louder shutter sound, need more stable hands.

Very hard decision to buy which one? Check your credit limit. Maybe neither A7 nor A7R.

No worries on buying A7R on credit. SG buys everything on credits. Property, car, wedding package, tour package, and even online betting. All these are more worrying than hobby on photography.

Only old man like me go to Funan and pay cash... including my M9P. That's why can always ask for lower price.

If your budget allows.

I worries for some sg who buying on credits. ....

Pay with cash ba, can save that 3% surcharge too. ( and why is it that these shops are still allowed to charge the 3% =.= when it's supposed to be illegal ) and heh , I also pay in cash.'

If I need to pay installments for a piece of electronics , I prob shouldn't be buying it.

So you going for any other new cam? DF or D800E?

Not at the moment. Think I should shoot more...

Will test out eos m. The price is very good for me as I hv ef lens.
