Official Canon EOS 7D User Thread Part I

I have the same setup as you (5D and 7D). I have considered buying the 12-24 lens as well and in fact rented a copy last September. The photo below is an example of a shot I took with the rented Sigma on my 5D. I did not use it with my 7D.

I am now reconsidering the Sigma 12-24 in favour of the Sigma 8-16 for the 7D. Photozone rates the 8-16 as the best of the UWA's. I understand that I will not be able to use it with my 5D but I already own the 17-40 so I don't feel that it is a huge deal. I also understand the issue of filter use.

Another advantage of the Sigma 8-16 is the fact that it is cheaper than the 12-24. Anyway, I am in no hurry to buy and will consider purchasing one or the other in the future.

Hmm, IQ of sig8-16mm better than sig12-24 and toki 11-16?? Any real life user wanna verify that? I almost never trust review sites.

It's a pity you did not try the sig12-24 on the 7D. May I know where you rented it from bro, seems like not many shops have them available for rental.

That's right. If you install the Canon IR on your hotshoe, due to the line of sight requirements you have to be in front of the camera to engage it. The Phottix uses radio waves and can be engaged at any position around the camera. If I remember correctly, the Phottix is also capable of a much longer reach than the Canon.
Hmm, i thought using canon ir you do not need to install ir receiver at hotshoe coz there is an ir receiver at 7d grip. That is what attracted me to it. I used to use cannon ir many years ago on me xxxD series and it seems to be fine. Not necessary to really be in front can still reach out your hand to the front lah just slightly incovenient. Ironically i rummaged through my stuff recently and found i actually have an unsued cleon in my cabinet lol

I rented it from the Camera Rental Centre:

Camera Rental Centre - Camera / DSLR / Lens / Video / Studio Rental Service in Singapore

The copy I got was not in the best shape but it was functional. Also, when I rented it in September, they had the Mark I version so I'm not sure if they've upgraded to Mark II. It would be great if you could also rent a Sigma 8-16 and do a test comparison on the 7D if possible.

The center focus point is usually da sharpest

Hey guys, what do you recommend for the 7D? The 17-55 or 17-40?

I agree. The 17-55 is the best walk around lens for the 7D (IMHO). The 17-40 is better suited as a UWA for 5D.

Anyone mind adding in more why is the 17-55 better? :D

its consider the best mid range zoom for crop sensor , something like 24-70mm on a FF.

anyway, if the lens range doesn't suits ur shooting style.. any lens can be bad.

The 17-40 is designed primarily as an Ultra Wide Angle lens for a full-frame camera. It is an "L" lens and as such carries with it a high mark of quality. However, its focal range is quite limited on a crop camera.

The 17-55 is designed for a crop camera like the 7D. Optically, many people feel that it is at an "L" level. The lens is among the sharpest and most vibrant for a crop camera. Ask any owner of a 17-55 and they will most likely sing the praises of this lens (as I do).

Here is a small sample of what this lens is capable of doing. (Notice how it picks up in detail the imperfections of the leaf on the right and the deep saturated colour of the leaf on the left. Bokeh is not bad either):

I heard the dust collecting is a problem on the 17-55, is that a very big issue? Plus, is it right to say the IQ of the 17-55 surpasses 17-40? I've been getting mixed responses in choosing between this two lenses so I need some advice ><

I've never had a problem with dust on my 17-55. I've heard and read that it is a problem in the area of the front element but if you keep a filter on the lens the issue is eliminated. Regardless, dust on the front element does not affect photos.

I own both the 17-55 and 17-40 lens but I use them for different bodies... 17-55 on my 7D (crop) and 17-40 on my 5D (full frame). Both produce excellent photos, but if I was limited to just the 7D camera, I would not hesitate for a second in choosing the 17-55 as my main walk around lens for two reasons:

i) Better focal range
ii) Better aperture (f/2.8) for low light photography

Your question about which produces the best IQ is rather subjective. Personally I think that both produce excellent photos and I have proof from both lenses. In fact Photozone (which is an independent review site), rates both lenses highly, but provides the 17-55 with its "Highly Recommended" award which is difficult to get from Photozone as it is considered to be conservative. Here are the links if you are interested in reading a little more about these lenses:

Good luck with your decision.

Exposure settings varies between locations and different people want to yield different kinds of effect.

So there is no one size fits all setting.

icic. So i guess i need a crash course for exposure!
