If u wanna do landscapes i dun think da 24mm on a crop sensor is wide enuf,so i wld suggest u get da 17-40..it's cheaper too

EFS 10-22 will be better

What if I have eventual plans to switch to a FF? Would it still be practical to get the 10-22 over the 17-40? :)

Agree with rvf79. Better to go with a wide angle lens for landscapes. The 17-40 will suffice but not as well as Canon 10-22, Sigma 10-20, Sigma 8-16 or Tokina 11-16.

For food photography, I would suggest the Canon 85mm or 100mm. These are nice sharp lenses and each produce great bokeh.

A wide angle lens is relatively easy to sell. If you do go to FF, you may consider keeping your crop setup and using it as a secondary backup. The 17-40 on a crop is equivalent to 27-64, which is not all that wide. The IQ between the Canon 17-40 and the various wide angle lenses is comparable.

Hi, I am choosing between the 17-40mm and the 24-70mm lens for my 7D or should I get a prime lens instead (if so, what do you suggest)? My main purpose of buying these lenses are for landscapes and food photography. What are your suggestions and comments when it comes to choosing between these lenses for that need?

Have you considered Tokina 11-16 for landscape? It's affordable and the IQ is soild.

Honestly, Tokina is rather good. F2.8 is good for indoor which other UWA might not able to provide.

Just my view.

what if I were to compare both the Tokina 11-16 and Canon 10-22, which is better? The thing I'm kinda concern of is the IQ and color third-party lenses produce compared to Canon... :/

I'm using the Tokina 11-16 on my 7D, I find that this lens is very sharp, have really good IQ, f2.8 is useful in light situations like concert halls and I love the color reproduction.

I don't own the Canon 10-22 so I cant comment on that, but having the Tokina, I never even once considered getting the Canon 10-22.

I agree with tsumetiv, i used to own dat lens..kinda regret selling it away

is the flare as commented on several other forums really that serious on the 11-16? Or is it still manageable?

10-22 for landscapes
24-70 for food

That would be my choice :-)

I both have experience in both lens and they are equally sharp in my own opinion. The main advantage of tokina is the 2.8 while the canon is more on the focal length of 10-22.

It all boils down to ur type of shooting style. U won't go wrong in any of the 2.

So far none of my friends regret getting Tokina, I can't comment on Canon coz I dun own it. I'm quite sure f2.8 you will need it.

All wide angle lenses from any brand are excellent. You cannot go wrong with any of them. This has already been said, but the advantage of the Tokina (at f/2.8) is low light photography. This would be an advantage for interior shots but would make very little difference for landscape photography.

Photozone, rates all wide angle lenses quite highly but the one that takes number one spot right now is the: Sigma 8-16. The only disadvantage with this lens is that it cannot take filters due to its bulging lens design.

I do not own any of these lenses. I used to own the Sigma 10-20 and was very happy with it until I sold it in favour of a Canon 17-40 for the full frame 5D. If I were to buy one today for my 7D, I would probably go with the Sigma 8-16. All others would come as a close second.

Hi guys, anyone here who have experience in using phottix or chromage battery grips for 7D? How's the quality and are they very comparable to the original? Which one do u recommend? Thanks in advance

Hi.. I am wondering, is there a big difference in term of IQ between Canon 17-40 F4 on 5dm2 and Tokina 11-16 f2.8 on 7d body.
Am having a 7d and 24-70 right now. And always having problem when shooting in low light situation. Due to some event, there is not allowed to use flash and I need high shutter speed to capture them.
Anyone, have other way to play with it? I currently using ISO 1600 to solve the problem which the IQ is not very good.

Increase to 3200 or 6400?
