Official Canon EOS 7D User Thread Part I

hey guys! my dad just got 7D cause normally i'm a nikon user, we are going to Macau over the weekend, and i'm thinking is there anyone that can share custom setting so that it can ease my dad? he wants to take portrait, architecture and vacation photos like places we go to and etc. Please help me out., thanks!

icic. So i guess i need a crash course for exposure!

As a Nikon user, you should be able to take what you've learned from your Nikon camera and apply it to the 7D. The basics are all the same regardless of which camera brand is used.

As a general catch all setting for Macau, I would recommend the following:

1. Use aperture priority (this will set your shutter speed automatically).
2. Use ISO 400.
3. Use AWB for your white balance.
4. You don't mention the lens to be used but I would recommend setting the f stop at f/7.1 or f/8. Obviously in darker situations you would want to adjust that to a larger aperture... say f/2.8 if your lens supports it.
5. Make sure that your lens is set to IS (VC on Nikon) and of course make sure that autofocus is turned on.
6. Bring your manual with you and read it on the plane. There is invaluable information in it that can be very useful.

These are very general outdoor daylight settings. Indoor and night photography are completely different.

I'm using EFS55-250mm f/4-5.6IS
EFS 18-135 IS (Comes with kit)
and the free EF 50 f1.8.

Is there any lens i should get?

Your focal range is pretty much covered except in one area. For architectural shots you could consider an UWA (ultra wide angle) lens. There are several to choose from and all are very good to excellent. Here are some popular choices:

Canon 10-22
Sigma 10-20
Sigma 8-16
Tokina 11-16

yup! i'm thinking of getting a canon 10-22 lens.

anyone use the 135L on 7D? how's the useability under low-light conditions? ie. street photography at night? i'm looking more at the hand-holdability.

tested Sigma 30mm F1.4. the result quite good. how isit compare to canon 35L (besides the huge price difference)? like AF faster? etc?

ah yes, the sigma 30/f1.4 is on my list as well but i am kinda doubtful about the AF accuracy.

yeah. same here.. which is why i wonder if 35mm is better in term of AF ,etc

Tried it with shooting the stage..... low lighting.... hand hand holdable.... but high ISO.... I suspecting my 7D could have low light back focusing issue... so bringing it in for a check.....

Got a few miss and hit and did not look like hand shake...... so very hard for me to give you a definite answer... sorry.....

Thinking of trying out primes for my 7D... Anyone has first-hand experience on the 35mm 1.4L and the 50mm 1.2L? Which do you feel is more versatile? I actually quite like both focal lengths, but I'm just contemplating on the best one in terms of sharpness and IQ. Any advice?
