OFFICIAL: CANON EOS 650D User Thread

What if the subject i wana take is a building set against a bright sky? I was trying to shoot the MBS towers from Gardens by the bay against a bright sky. the result was that the towers were very dark
Exposure bracketing?

I try not to rely on post processing too much. Wana learn how to take backlit pictures using the exposure lock function. Search online but can't find any tutorial for eos 650D

There is no way not to rely on post processing in a backlit situation. The DR in a backlit situation will exceed the DR of your camera and you have to employ either post processing techniques or artificial lighting techniques (for portraits, if it's landscapes it doesn't apply) to counter it.

Yes, pp is usually required for back lit situation, unless you are happy with the out of camera results.

Even with pp, you need know the performance of your camera really well too, how much DR it has. In order to pull out enough details from the highlights and shadows.

hello new user reporting in with a question; i took the cam to Switch(its kinda like timbre) and tried to take a self-photo of me and my friends using the touchscreen. however, no matter how hard i tried it would not focus =/ i'm guessing it's due to the poor lighting...how do u improve the focus in a dark light situation? ( i was in av mood; i might have missed the option to use the flash to focus? it was my first outing with it so i am still not used to the functions. haha)

In low light situations there are a number of things you can do. I'm not sure that I'll capture everything so others can chime in...

1. Use a flash.
2. Set ISO to a high number (ie. 3200 and above)... caution: the more you increase the ISO the noisier the photo becomes
3. Set the aperture on the lens to its lowest value (or widest setting).
4. Adjust exposure compensation.
5. Use external lighting.
6. Focus on an area of high contrast.
7. Take off any filters that may be on the front of your lens.
8. Use a lens that has a very wide aperture (ie. f/2.8 or lower value... f/1.2).
9. Rather than using the AV mode, use the Canon 650D Night Scene mode.
10. Pray.

Hello All, I'm a happy owner of 650D too. Very pleased with it so far. Just added the 40mm pancake treat to my collection :) nice knowing you all.

am i the only one who didn't know you could do a long-exposure bulb shot without using a shutter release/remote? :o

Unless you want a cramped index finger, it's better to use a shutter release. :D

hehe but if you use live view, you just need to tap the touchsreen to start the bulb...and tap it again later when you want it to stop! even has a timer on the screen. it totally blew my noob mind :bsmilie:

Whole point of a remote shutter is so that your camera don't shake.;)
