Official Canon EOS 60D User Thread Part I

BTW... wanna ask u guys 1 question....

Regarding the battery, Phottix wan must use their own charger in order to charge the battery. There got another version with micro chip thingy which give info like battery lifespan etc. Can anyone here confirm whether this battery can be charged by canon charger? If not is there any 3rd party battery available which can be charge by canon charger?

And erm... what is the price for the original battery?

The original battery cost around 130+.
but I bought one third party battery just work same as the original,
it has the chip which can show the battery info in the camera menu,
and it can be charge by original charger, this battery cost me 50+.

I just got this fully compatible battery ordered from eBay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150497552629
Tried it with my 60D and works just like an original- can be charged with the Canon charger and displays full battery info in camera menu.

Yet to test if actual capacity lasts as long as the original, but very happy with the price paid, because original battery price listed at Canon S'pore website is $139!
http://www.canon.com.sg/personal/products/dslrs/eos-accessories#type=battery-pack

wow~the price really cheap!
thinking whether should I get one more extra battery now:bsmilie:

how do you think about the performance?
is that the battery last long as original battery?

Wah!!! Don't think I am getting the original battery... didn't know it is that expensive...

But then... what 3rd party battery brand is usable? At the moment I only trust Phottix leh...

The third party batteries i've had experience with, usually have a battery life of about HALF their original counterparts. This is to say the same consistency of shots,ie comparing no flash fired when using both batteries. But its good to have at least 1 or 2 spare, original or not, in your arsenal especially when shooting overseas.

Fixed the problem ... when loading into bag, i must have accidentally adjust the wheel thingy!:(;)

Cheerios

That little wheel thingy is called dioptric adjustment,
It is adjusting focus point to match your glasses

Actually, if you all get use to read the manuals first,
You will read about dioptric adjustment on all Canon DSLR

I mean, all DSLR have this features ...

I just used the battery for the first time today. I shot entirely using "live" view. I spent a total of about 40mins in "live" view mode composing shots plus about 10mins reviewing shots with the LCD. And the lens I used has no stabilizer to drain the battery. When I got home, battery level was down to 43% from full charge. I think it is quite comparable to the original battery when I first used it, though I don't recall exactly how long it took to drain the original one. In any case, even if this OEM battery lasted only half as long as Canon's original battery, buying two of them still costs less than half to buy a single original battery. So it's an obvious choice to me.

I have just emptied my pockets for the 60D and EFS 17-55 F2.8 IS USM....the feeling of empty pocket is kinda strange....gotta start saving again.

I love the 60D but it is still a stranger to me, will need more time to develop feeling for her. The is a bit of discomfort over the button handling as I came from a 400D, buttons and setting are all over the place to me. Anyway it is just a matter of time to get use to it, gotta move on with technology and not get tied down by the tradition (If anyone is still bothered by the change of button layout, you gotta read the book called "Who moved my cheese?")

Images are great, maybe I am expecting a great difference in IQ as compared from 400D. And the video capturing is stunning, smooth and creamy, will find time to do some arty fart video.

As for AF, it is faster than the 400D but not a jump. As long there is ample light, the focusing is fast.

The body is solid even though it is plastic. And the weight of the body with EFS 17-55 F2.8 is well balanced. But due to the size, I think I will need to get a bigger camera bag. I do not think I will use the free bag.

Congrat bro in getting your cam and lens.... It will take a while to get use to a new cam usually, so you just send some more time shooting and you will understand it better....

So the AF is only marginally better than a 400D only?? Care to elaborate??

Did you ask for other stuff rather than the bag ? As i already got a bag, I ask for a 77mm filter with some top up
Hope still got time to exchange something useful.

Bro hw u find the 24105 on a 60d???

Hi Bro...

I am pretty sure that you are eager to know....since we are in the same boat.

Lets start off with the AF with kit lens, I am quite surprised by the kit len's focusing speed as it is really fast without USM. I never buy the kit lens but tried it at Canon Showroom in Vivo. Maybe my comparison is between the kit lens from 400D and 60D, so the jump is too far.

When I first try out the 60D mounted with the EFS 17-55 IS USM at the shop when buying, the focusing is not really that fast as due to the indoor lighting condition and the 9 AF pts are activated. When switch to center spot focusing, it is fast.

Overall I feel that the AF has been improved marginally as compared to my 400D. At least, the lens do not search so much right now. Lighting plays a part in AF. Maybe I had demand too much when changing to a new system, so the result is marginal. But the setup do suits my photography workflow. The benchmark for fast focusing still belongs to 7D.

Something which I have forgotten to mentioned is the FPS....the blasting of shots is not as SHIOK as the 50D....cannot fire like a machine gun. Blasted the 50D at the showroom sometimes ago....I feel like the Terminator "I will be back!".....HAHA!!! Anyway I have no intention to abuse the frame counts on my camera....

This is a rush purchase as I am going to shoot my best friend's ROM next week or else I will probably wait for a while longer like during the next com fair or Christmas for better promo. Right now, I will just need to get use to the setup and get ready to shoot my friend's ROM :D

Hope I have answered your question.

Not really a happy man...I will only happy when I get the perfect shots

Huh...can exchange? I dunno and just took the bag home....its a useless bag to me and I do not like it. The bag that comes with the 550D looks nicer...

I think cannot exchange already, opened the packaging....

The weight balance is much much better w/o battery grip. AF is faster.
But for live view, take a long time to get AF right, usually i use MF for that.

bro, try using quick mode when using live view. think you are currently using the mode where it auto focus with the mirror down, thats why its so slow. with the quick mode its takes just fractions of a second to get focus.

Hey man... thanks for the tip! Hehe... didn't know the quick mode is quickly off live view, focus then live view again... :-D

BTW guys... I just confirmed with reddotphoto that Phottix Rechargeable battery LP-E6 (2000 mah) (Microchipped!) can be charged with the original charger. $36 according to the webby. :-D

Hope I have answered your question.

Thanks bear for your response Bear.... you know we were in the same boat, now using the same lens, 17-55..... but body... still not yet same....

I was considering the 60D... and am still considering it.... and now... I wonder... about the 7D.... hahaha...... I tried the 7D and 60D in Canon show room.... The GPMG (7D) vs Semi Auto rifle (60D) and pistol (550D)...... After your review... I should still stick to 60D cos my subjects are not so hyper one.....

I ever broke my 300X (Film body) shutter due to FPS..... hahaha... no fun at all.... paid some money for it too...

When will I hoot???

I think USM was saying this DEC could be a showdown.... the D7000 will launch, and Sony dSLR are a thorn in N & C pocket... The A550 spec is also very tempting.... and Sony really bring the roof down for DSLR..... The 550 spec almost rival the 7D, and it is at $1200+ RRP.... That thread disappeared I think.... and after I itchy backside see Sony DSLR on their website.... it is really getting really competitive man..... Hope this is good news for us all... Wonder if Canon will bring their 60D to rival the 550???

By then, if really price war.... and 7D drop some more in pricing... I could switch my target... I like the 7D hold... and feel.... and the many more options available... and if I get it, I have to use the functions.... but at the end of the day.... I will consider buying in early 2011......

Canon rumors were also saying Canon will refresh their lens line up too..... this is also good news, and I hope they will revamp their ancient primes in 2011......

All the best and have fun shooting your friend ROM.... ;)

Ya hor, Thanks alot. forgot about the quick mode function exist in 60D, hahaha......
Thanks Bro

Its subjective when comes to camp switching, you may have upper hand with the best technology today and lose it immediately tomorrow. So I personally feel that being dedicated will be good to extend the usage of your equipments.

My photography subject is mainly my family and the Canon 5D MKII with a L lens was my initial target but after a long thought(up to 1yr), I will need to give and take. I love 5D MKII for its FF sensor and good noise reduction but the weight is pulling me down....and now 60D just pop by to meet my needs of a family man who wants a decent lightweight camera with performance.

L lens was also my aim because I am thinking of long-term investment but I have to pay big sum for it. So right now, I have learned to let go of those negative consumer's behavior and just buy what I need right now. We are all human with desire and honestly know that the current camera will never be the last camera for you...

Hi guys,

Just like to enquire on whether the 60D is weather proof (ie. rain)??
Will be joining the coming Canon Photomarathon and would want to be prepared in case of wet weather.

BTW, any one joining the photomarathon??
