OFFICIAL: CANON EOS 5D Mark III - User Thread - Part 5

Really? Has that been your experience?... just asking... cause I have no idea why Canon would differentiate on the basis of source acquisition.

Probably comparing a local set still in warranty.

Yes it happens to me and my acquaintances for number of times. According to a friend working in Canon SG said it is due to discouraging public to buy parallel goods as these sources bypass Canon SG.

Canon will know the exact information of the gray item being sent in just by the screening the serial number.

But I think for cleaning (general servicing like sensor cleaning as such), it should still be the same charge bah..

Hi Guys,

I was planning to upgrade my 5D for a 5D3.
However now kinda in a dilemma due to the new Sony A7.

Can anyone share on why 5D3 is still a better choice or what should I be using as a consideration?
Thank you.

That would be up to you to decide. On one hand, 5d3 is still much larger than the A7, but switching to A7 means selling off existing lens to get Sony lenses.

Cost wise A7 is slightly cheaper at the price range of 2k+++, but after the lens selling and buying, If that's worth then go ahead.

Be prepared to pay more when you send in gray set as compared to local set.

Yeah, please substantiate your claim.

Unless you are talking about CPS which covers only local set

This is quite a surprise for me. I didn't realize that Canon did this. Anyway, good information to know.

Would this also affect tourists from other countries who need to get a piece of equipment fixed while visiting in Singapore?

I have sent in all my overseas purchased camera bodies before. They know its bought overseas from the serial numbers. They don't discriminate because of that. Charges are the same as well.

I can't say for others. From my experiences and feedbacks from people i know of, there was a slight jack in charges for gray stuffs.

This is what I don't understand about the higher servicing costs for gray sets...

From my understanding, gray sets are nothing more than authentic Canon products sourced from out of the country and brought/smuggled into Singapore. Because they are not 'home-grown' products, they are sold to the agent at a lower cost because they come 'warranty free' i.e. without warranty. As a result, the agent is then able to sell the gray product at a reduced price often providing a shop warranty in the hopes that it will never be used.

Based on this understanding, how then can Canon Singapore differentiate a gray set vs. a legitimate product brought in from another country by a tourist?

You must have an earlier version of CS6. Just click to update your software and you will have access to your 5D3-CR2 files.

Assuming you have a legitimate license, all that is needed is the following:

1. Click on Help.
2. Click on Updates

I just performed this action on my own copy of PhotoShop without any problems.

Photoshop CS6 has been supporting 5D3 RAW files since the Camera Raw 7.1 update (which is quite old).

Click on this Adobe link for further information: Adobe Camera RAW 7.1 Update

DNG converter is not the same as Adobe camera raw (ACR).

But at this point, the easiest is to just update from inside Photoshop.

DNG is a software that convert your camera RAW (eg canon is *.CR2, other brands have different format) to DNG format.
Adobe Camera Raw is a file (or plugin?) that inside the Adobe software to read RAW format of different camera models.

Can look at this adobe blogs on how to update. There a link for manual update if your working pc is not connected to internet.

Hi,

I recently brought a sandisk extreme CF card 64GB with 120MB/s speed.
After shooting about 1.2K plus photos .. the speed for the card became slow and I lost shot that was not capture on the card.
It also fail to read some of my photos in the card.

What I did was i manage to copy all the photo that it can read to the SD card and i reformat the card.
In doing that I lost about 400+ photos which the camera cannot read.

After that it was working fine, until i took about another 600 to 700 photos.
when I was transfering into the computer, i lost about another 50+ photo due to JPG file corrupt.

Does anyone have any of this issue on the new extreme CF card?

It is really heartbreaking when you lost so many pictures..
