OFFICIAL: CANON EOS 5D Mark III - User Thread - Part 5

actually hehe....the 5D3 pairs better with the 1DX because it is much lighter! the 1DX plus 120-300 combi was a killer in terms of weight

Thanks guys for the feedback on my query of 50mm lens .... I will check out sigma 1.4

Hi all,
After careful consideration btwn the 6d and 5dmkiii I will be upgrading to a 5dmkiii very soon.
I'm just wondering if there are any serial numbers/batches that should be avoided.

At the moment I have found out that devices with 1 or 2 as the 6th digit has light leak issue.

That was quite a long time ago. It should be fine by now.

If you are buying new from reputable shop, it is near impossible to get a set from such old batch.

Skystrike >> Thanks!

Limiter >> I had a prior experience buying a lens from a shop that comes recommended in the forum where I got an early batch of the lens that didn't have the latest firmware.. THen needed to go and upgrade firmware on my own to solve an issue it had with my camera.. THat's why I am being cautious and gathering information. But yeah, thanks for assuring me that such a thing may not happen.

Cheers!

To play safe, check the serial number before buying. Later batches does not have this problem.

Just make sure your 5d3 comes with the latest firmware n u shld be fine.

The old 'problem' was not really a big thing though.... only if u shoot with yhe lens cap on haha.

Yeap! Gonna do that. I wonder what are the newer serial numbers and how do I go about finding out which numbers are the safer ones?

ricleo >>> Haha.. Yeap. You are right. The light leak should not be an issue.

But putting a 10-16 stop ND is almost equivalent to putting a lens cap on.... But nothing a good eyecup cover cannot fix...

The original strap comes with an eye cup cover!

Sky strike. I don't think an eyecup cover would work. The light leak is reportedly from the led display near shutter and not from stray light from viewfinder. I wish it would be that simple. Haha. But I guess this can be a avoided by switching off the led light

As ricleo has mentioned, you don't have to care about that so called light leak issue at all.

Mtunlinn>>> yup. Thanks! I shan't worry about it ! Sourcing for best price and freebies now.

I agree with all the posts regarding the light leak issue. At the time it was quite a minor nuisance and certainly not a worrisome issue. Some people didn't even bother to send their 'affected' cameras into Canon to get it 'altered' FOC and thereby eliminating the problem. Certainly at the present time, the issue is dead and the affected serial numbers have long been sold.

We are lucky that Canon has a proven product in the 5D3 and that it has withstood the test of time. Our Nikon brothers have not fared nearly as well with both the D800 (focus problems) and even more particularly the D600 (oil issues). a peek at the Nikon forums internationally shows a lot of frustration, anger and disappointment in these products. Let 's hope that their D610 will come out of the gate problem free (like the 5D3 and 6D).

oooo.. I always thought it's from the viewfinder.

One minor remark that 5Diii did not do that well is in the paint job (after 5 months of usage, the paint around my shutter release button looks pretty worn off)... well. Not that it affects the IQ.. Just that my rebel looks better externally :bsmilie:

*I'm still trying to hope for the day where Canon will give it some firmware updates to allow off center metering -_- *

I wish that too, now often have to press the AE lock then recompose, especially when using spot metering during some outdoor shoot.

I find that AE lock recompose can be abit time consuming. During fast paced events, it's hard to apply this technique. During then I'm using Matrix metering for those fast paced events (+- ev)
