OFFICIAL: CANON EOS 5D Mark III - User Thread - Part 5

Guys, everytime when we switch on/off the camera we'll hear the flip lockup sound..like manual mirror lockup. Suddenly just now, my camera doesn't do that anymore.. What's wrong? Before this my button hangs..

Perhaps what you've heard when turning the camera on or off is the automatic sensor cleaning mechanism. To my knowledge there is no mirror lock-up.

Is there a chance that the auto-sensor cleaning could have been disabled in the menu system?

Nope. It still does shows "Sensor Cleaning" when on/off. Just no sound. I've even lost shutter speed of 1/160 & 1/200 now..tried on all my Canon lenses. It still takes photo & etc, but I'd reckon something ain't right here.. =(

love this camera, except one thing only, the AF point cannot always turn on (red) like previous 5dmk2 or 1d series, so need to be adapt the new method.....

takes time to get to use it, especially when in the dark / low light situation, needs to press right top button 1st to acknowledge where is the current AF point is.

Hmm... I think you're right when you say that there may be something wrong. I hope for your sake that it's not too serious.

A trip to CSC or a PM to Fatigue may be in order. Good luck and keep us advised on your progress... :)

"Fatigue"?? PM to who?

I'm stressing out now.. I was even more a lil' panicking when my 5d3 froze for a moment then these symptoms occurred!!

Yes, I find this mildly annoying too. Recently, I've been on several outings taking night shots and the AF pt lights up in some settings but not in others. There were times when it was so dark that I couldn't focus on a point of contrast and therefore had difficulty obtaining focus.

Did this change with the latest firmware upgrade? I remember reading something about that but I can't remember any specifics. When you say that the top right button works around this issue, are you referring to the back of the camera?

I'm sorry to hear you're stressing. Things will be resolved soon I'm sure.

Fatigue is a fellow ClubSnapper who has developed expertise in diagnosing and repairing camera equipment. He recently did a repair on my 17-40 lens which I was very satisfied with. Previously, I had sent everything to CSC but Fatigue's prices and timeliness are very good. He is quite well known in the ClapSnap community and has helped several individuals. You can PM (private message) him directly using his ClubSnap name, "Fatigue" (David is his real name).

Whether you use Fatigue or CSC, I hope that this gets resolved for you in a timely fashion. Good luck.

I just rented Canon EOS 5D mark iii. Just now I was Clarke quay shooting, I do also noticed this that the AF had a hard time locking on
at night. So it's normal? Anyone I too love this camera and will be getting it soon.

Thank You Bro Raydio. I'll consult CSC 1st as my 5d3 just turn 60days old. Thanks for the recommendations btw. I'm sure CSC can resolve this, just that I'm flying off to Bali in few days & invested in Lee Filters for the trip.. Sigh!

No, that's not really the issue 86proshooter. What we meant to say is that the 5D3's software does not allow the red focal light to be illuminated when focus is achieved. In other words, focus can be achieved AND the red focal light will not illuminate under some settings/situations.

The 5D3 can achieve focus very well as long as it has a minimal amount of contrast to focus against. When I was having problems focusing in the dark, it was because my AF point (which I could not see in the dark), was attempting focus in pure darkness. Once I move the AF point around to a lighted area, focus was achieved instantly.

Sorry to have confused the issue.

Bali huh... lucky you!

I hope that you have a backup in case your 5D3 is not repaired in time for the trip. Have fun on the trip and be sure to post some photos for us.

I'd reckon my auto sensor cleaning is malfunction. My shutter was due to my Exposure Incremental was set to half stop instead of one third stop that results to certain shutter speed not available. Is this a norm? I'll send to CSC when I'm back. Just disabled the auto sensor cleaning.

I do also noticed this as the red light does not illuminated even when I focus on a subject that is near.
More like firmware issue?
Anyway good thing for me to rent it first as 5D mark iii as it's rather a advanced camera for me, I still
have to learn more how to use after I own one.

If im not wrong.. U can change the AF illumination to always ON.. Go to setting.. Under AF menu..

its not included in latest firmware, they fix the issue on 1DX, but not on 5D3, here's quote from petapixel:

Here’s what Craig Blair over at Canon Rumors was told by a source regarding this:

They are testing that at the moment but don’t know if it is possible to implement. The former system had a different type of focusing screen and it was easy to handle because it had no reflection in the viewfinder. The new system, with the LCD screen inside the viewfinder is reflecting the red light back and this can affect the light metering system. In the EOS-1D X, the viewfinder box is bigger than in EOS 5D Mark III, which aids in making it possible and workable. In the EOS-1D X they alternate red illumination and metering, and this is why there is the red blinking. With the EOS 5D Mark III, they are testing it but they are not sure if they can make it operate in the same way.

and yes im refering the top right button on the back of the camera, the other way you can press a centre joystick as well, and then press the centre one more time. (1st center is to make a center point, and 2nd centre press is back to previous point)

try to use AF point, the one square with a point at the centre, you can activate it by pressing m-fn button, but you need to set the button to do the AF point selection first in the settings menu.

yes it is, but it cannot stay red just like 5D and 1d series, they use a different methodology to do this, the old one is using led if I'm not wrong, its easy to handle, not with this new type.

most of the people notice this are from old 5d users or from 1D series users.

Seems like the problem is solved but I need to shoot more to confirm.
Thanks anyway.

This is helpful. Thanks for your clarification!

CSC says my 5D3 is perfectly fine. They ran a diagnosed & found no error, unless I leave my camera for few days! I'm going ahead to my trip with my camera.

That's good news!... glad to hear that it turned out fine.

I just brought my Canon EOS 5D mark iii and it's super big leap for me.
Moving from Canon EOS 650D to Canon EOS 5D mark iii.
