I think he meant the red AF light... can see the AF blinks from outside the lens.

I think it can be off. Check ur manual

Well, holy ****, it does do that. My guess from the AF confirmation in the viewfinder that lights up in low-light. Yes, it can be turned off. Interesting....

yup, that AF light can be turned off, default settings is turn on when in low light, there's 2 more options: always on, always off.

but I tried taking pics of myself, didn't see any lights (I set always on)

hmm, I tried aiming the lens at myself and took some pictures, didn't see any red light :(

when you set to auto on bright environment it might not light up.

Do it in a low-light environment and make sure you hold lens beyond the MFD.

the red light on the lens is dangerous for photojournalist covering war or conflict, you can be a potential target :o

I prefer to use it.. coz sometime very hard to determine lock or no lock without beep

mine is set to always on :p

Good point there, I will try it before I sleep (off lights) :D

hmm, is the red light so obvious?

Eh..doesn't the scrren flash red once lock?
I personally don't like th beep….esp when you do delayed shot..it beeps non stop until it takes a shot...

yup quite obvious specially on a low light environment.

i turn this off when doing street shoot together with the silent shutter so people don't know i'm taking photos of them :bsmilie:

Ah OK... found where to turn it off. Unfortunately it means it's also off in the viewfinder... so if you turn off the focus beep, you only have your eye to tell you focus has been made ;p. Oh well. I will leave if always on.

I notice on the 24-105 that at 24, the flash is very small, but at 105 it's quite obvious... focal length dependent I guess.

Canon 5D Mark III vs. Nikon D800 Part 2 with Mike Drew - YouTube
Very good test between the 5D3 and D800 in JPG with no NR…
I'm guessing this will be useful for most of us since not everyone shoots RAW and edits every single raw file we shoot…so JPG's gotta be darn good and this video puts that to the test…and you'll be happy to know we bought a really good JPG camera..even without NR…i'm thinking if i actually wanna turn off my NR from now on :)

Thanks for sharing... this has to be one of the best practical tests I've seen between the 5D3 and D800. Both are very capable cameras but in this test, the Canon comes out on top. I liked and agree with what the guest said at the end about switching systems... very wise words.

Thank you for sharing, great video! I just bought a 16-35 F2.8 n mount on my Miii last night, result is like razor blade! Nvr feel so high 'shooting' my baby late at night in the park.

Part 1 is also pretty good. All about RAW files in the studio…i think that one goes to the D800..which makes sense. I believe studio and product photographers will all switch to D800 because the 36MP does matter when you print something on the side of a building…but I think Canon really concentrated on the mass market Event/Wedding and Press photographer where you'd want small great looking JPGs in all lighting conditions and that's where the 5D3 shines..it's all about market share i guess and that's a real smart move by Canon.

So..how many of you shoot with NR turned OFF in JPG? i kinda did some personal tests last night taking in to consideration i don't pixel peep at 100% crop and i post the photos only on Facebook type sites and honestly, with or without NR..even at ISO6400…i can't tell the difference...

Question: Does each camera model have their own specific variant of DPP or is DPP independent of Canon models?

In other words, the DPP version that will be downloadable next Wednesday for the 5D3... can it also be used for the 7D and any other camera model that Canon makes?

DPP is standardized for all Canon DSLRs :)

Should be universal but the issue arises from the fact that the MkIII uses a newer version of CR2, hence the problems and updates to handle the MkIII's RAW files.

Thanks guys. I guess I'll be downloading the latest version when it becomes available next week. :)

yup, download the latest versions as Canon always update their stuff inside, including EOS Utility. BTW, for the existing "latest" copy of the DPP, the new L Lens (24-70L II) already had it's correction data insde - if you intend to buy, remember to copy over the correction data to your camera body. :)

nice video.
i love the shutter sound of the D800,very solid.
it makes the 5D3 sounds like a toy.lol

Today was the first time i really tested the camera for low light night photography and i must say…i am truely in love with the 5D3!
It gave new life to my old and slow lenses. I had to use the Tamron 70-300 which isn't a very fast lens and i had to shoot at F5.6 because the lens doesn't go faster than that…
Before the 5D3 i would never have brought this out in the night..
But being able to shoot at ISO10000 and beyond, this lens has a new life!
This photo is out of camera JPG with an edited Faithful Picture style. I actually did shoot in RAW but i found out that after editing 1 RAW to the final outcome..it actually looked exactly like the JPG so in the end i just deleted all the RAWs and went with jpg out of the camera
