Sigma 50mm F1.4 is better than Canon 50mm F1.4. Sharper wide open, Sigma circular aperture 9 blades vs Canon non-circular 6 or 7 blades. Sigma's Ring HSM vs Canon's Micro-USM.

Canon wins in pricing and weight, but sigma F1.4 is meant to compete with Canon F1.2L, but of course, canon F1.2L is 1 class higher.

Like:
Cheapest: 50mm F1.8
Value for Money: 50mm F1.4
Value for money with good performance: Sigma 50mm F1.4
Extra-ordinary performance: Canon 50mm F1.2L
Super Expensive and Fast: Canon 50mm F1.0L

btw, does anyone uses 3rd party canon LP-E8 battery? Does this battery have a chip inside, just like 5DMKII/7D battery?

im still waiting for the proper LCD protector.....if only canon has that nikon lcd cover thingy.

welcome back 550d users! i just got my 50 f/1.8!

may i know where to get LCD protector for 550D?

so nice to be back!:)

I bought mine from here. It's not perfect but hey, it's cheap. I'll probably post pics of it later. It missed some 2 or 3mm on the wide side.

Yeah, it's good to be back, but still the site is not yet that stable. :(

Way to go 550d! Tho I was expecting a higher score

Hi all,
I'm planning to buy the battery grip to complement my large hands and of course to have spare juice when the event calls for it. I'm looking at DD Electronics price, but would anyone else know where to get it cheaper?

BTW, I got my sig fixed already ;-)

i feel the 550D abit small for my hands too. lol! not good for a long walkabout while holding the camera. my style now is pretty different compared to when i had the 50D. now i will take shots of what i want, then keep the cam back into the bag again and continue walking abt.

anyway, i'm looking for the LCD protector, but till now no luck. Battery grip is available at CP and MS @ $200 and $199 respectively. Not worth it. just hang on and wait til other shops get it...the price will drop to $185.

anyway 550D had been a great camera for me and my purpose. totally love it! its so convenient, light and easily held with one hand. (used it to camwhore with my gf and she totally digs that). but somehow i do miss my 50D's garang-feel. 550D is great for the travelling peeps who wanna go light yet want to get the best mix of compactness and image quality. looking to get some good and cheap tele...looking at the 85 f/1.8 for my street photos.

hbc, does it fit the 550D exactly?

i think i'm the only one here upgrade from 500D to 550D
actually it is not an upgrade, my gf want to get a DSLR, so give me a chance to get a new body :)
just give her the 500D with kit I, she is more then happy. ofcuz i keep the tammy 17-50 2.8 haha...
wanted to get a 50D (7D is too ex) but found the 50D too heavy for me

no regret getting the 550D, although there is not much diff between the 500 and 550
but the 550D really perform better in the high ISO, now seem like ISO 6400 is 'acceptable'
as in the 'focus speed' cant feel the difference
i use to work as video editor b4, the full HD movie on 550D is really good, feel like making a short film with it

for those who comparing 500D and 550D, trust me, just go for 550D if u have the budget, it worth the few hundred buck extra
i bought the body in china, RMB4940 (since i always travel to china, so warranty is not an issue for me) when the clubsnap is down, so i din compare the price, seem like cheaper

Hi,

I am considering to get the 550d or a MFT GF1 as my entry system camera. For Canon 550d does the 18-55mm kit lens perform well in low light condition? which other lens is good?

Pls advise. Thanks...

how low is low? previous i was stuck to this qns, then i thought tammy 17-50 2.8 help... but at the end i end up with a nissin di866 attach to my 550D hotshoe.
it really depend on wat kind of low light condition, outdoor travel, ballroom function, sometime even ur living room can consider a low light condition.
a big aperture might help, but sometime you dont want your friend at the back of the group out of focus, and your gf will scold at you when the hong kong night view is not in focus.
so a kit lens with a good flash will do the trick, or the high ISO of 550D will help.
it all depend on what you need, there is a lot of useful info in this forum, i really learn a lot after i join this forum, hope you can get your answer here too

Yup.. u are right. Low light condition can vary with different condition. Actually i will be using it mainly for travel. Dun wan it to be too bulky also. :bsmilie:

Are u using the 18-55mm kit lens? good? how is the ISO performance?

hey guys i used to be on the CF card. now coming to SDHC i really know nuts about it. is the sandisk ultra good enough? i am using a kingston 8gb SDHC class 4. read on the 550D manual that class 6 is recommended. is class 2 enough?

if u ain't shooting with it with 1080p video, i think class 4 is already good with RAW format.

Class 2 i used that before, works fine.

personally looking to upgrade to 16Gb SDHC card to shoot 1080p (25fps PAL) video, need at least class 6. but price is still high.
