thanks for the tip. what could you comment about its image quality? is it as sharp as the 15-85mm? cos the canon one i tested and it appears fine. much sharper than the ef50mm 1.8 wide open (i compared)

Bro check out the review of the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.0 DC OS HSM here:

http://www.lenstip.com/223.11-Lens_review-Sigma_17-70_mm_f_2.8-4.0_DC_Macro_OS_HSM_Summary.html

this site has sample pics at the bottom, full jpeg file if u wanna check out the sharpness! Has a pic sample in each focal lengths so as to your question on sharpness!:D
they also have a review on the canon 15-85 on that side, but like me, they find it to expensive... Coz if u add lets say $100 to $200 to your budget, u can already get an "L" lense from buy n sell here at CS!

Happy shooting bro! Also, i still think 50mm f1.8 shoots sharper esp. in low light! Or maybe its just me! :)

Hello ppl. Just wanna ask, if you already own an eos500d is it worth it to upgrade to 550d? Lets say u have the budget to do so. Pls elaborate, thanks!

If you say upgrade, you shld be looking at 50D and up...500D is about the same as 550D less the video functions and the extra 3megapixel...

Got budget best...go 7D and up...

:)

agreed. even the-digital-picture said that 500D users shld consider very carefully if 550D is worth the upgrade as they have the least to gain shld they crossover. if u wanna upgrade, get the 7D!!

Wow that's very cheap! But correct, my concern buying internationally is the warranty.

@auden
JO sells for $1080 but CP sells for $1060(excl GST)

both prices excluding GST?

Fellow 550D user, F1.8 and F3.5 is a huge difference in aperture opening.
Furthermore, 15-85mm IS at 50mm, F stop should reduce to around F4.5 le.
:D

Thanks for the review site. The performance at 70mm is disappointing. However, it is very very sharp at 17mm wide open.

No, only CP excl GST.

thanks for the review site. Will be very helpful for my decision. As a newbie, I am very reluctant at buying third party lenses.

so its $1060 (inclusive of GST) for CP?

anyway abt 3rd party lens...seems ok. im not one who use 3rd party lens or accessories but i have a friend who uses the tamron 17-50 (quite a lot of ppl use this) and its working good. canon's 17-55 is just too expensive (for a plastic body). the 15-85 is a great lens too, but the build isn't worth the money brand new. but no choice...it has the best range for a lot of ppl out there. me including.

When 5DMKIII come out, 5DMKII should experience another dip.

Another dip after this $700 slashing? I might be wrong but I seriously dun think so...even if there is another dip, it probably won't be as significant...

IT will take another year at least before 5DMKIII is out. The next in the list is 60D, followed by 2000D, if there care about budget market.
Darn... Digic III processors are not dead yet, so there might not be 2000D.

No, it's 1060 not including gst.

Thanks for the response btw. And yeah it appears a lot of reviews say 15-85mm is too expensive. But image quality-wise it's a big jump from its kit lens predecessor.

Yes, it is really expensive. I was really hoping 15-85 has faster aperture. Some people actually did mention that they rather top up a few hundred dollars more for the excellent 17-55mm IS USM F2.8.

yeah its a $400 top up. I think my budget can only stretch to $1.1k...damn. anyway brothers, i'm on a 50D and considering going to sell it for the 550D for better IQ. The 50D has just too much noise and the photos have a tint of magenta/red which I don't fancy. anyone with any idea what would i lose shld i switch to the 550D? basically i am a streets/travel/family shooter. any advice is much appreciated!

I main thing I stay at 350D is because of noise issue also. Though there are people who advise that noise performance only make up a small part of photography, but i find it important if u do frequent night shoots and indoor shoots.

Auden09, by downgrading to 550D, u will be loosing ur FPS, the very useful secondary LCD panel for additional 20% of megapxel and perheps 1 addition stop of noise performance. If u have big hands, u might find 550D comfort to a limit. I suggest u save up more for 7D, go straight to 5DMKII if ur most lenses are EF lens, or wait for 60D. U might want to check out 40D as I recall 40D has slight noise advantage, just like 450D vs 500D.

omg im not going 40D!! lol...well my lens collection very humble. 15-85 and 50 f/1.8. i dun plan to buy too many lenses. and the only flash i use is 270EX. dun see the need for anything more currently. so looking at wad i do and shoot, i feel 550D will suit me well cuz got the much better noise control and the colors produced arent reddish like 50D's. the batteries and grip are cheaper too. that's why i like the rebel series bodies. i dunnid the fps, i always shoot one-shot anyway. and the video...is a plus because i'm videography trained. lol!
