Hi zhehaolau,
Thanks for your tips! Really helps.![]()
Nothing beats hands on with camera. I suggest heading down to shops in Funan to try out the cameras. Check out the 'Newbies' section for recommended shops. Have fun!

Hi zhehaolau,
Thanks for your tips! Really helps.![]()
by the way, flash pops up in a number of other modes besides full-auto.If the flash pops up den u r probably on auto mode. Most importantly first u should read up the tons of guides available on Apeture, Shutter speed & ISO. Den try shooting at manual on fixed scenes and get a feel of how each setting affect ur photo.
When u are more comfortable with what each setting does u can shoot at apeture priority or shutter priority (Depending on the subject) den learn about the other settings such as white balance, focus mode, etc.
and in no time u will be able to call urself an beginner![]()
like zhehaolau says, i usually use Tv-mode (shutter priority). 1/60 sec is good, but can consider 1/100 as well. turning on all the lights in the house or shoot outdoors. you can consider getting a flash as well.Hi guys, intend to get a dslr. Mainly to capture beautiful moments of my son, but as he's entering toddlerhood he gets really active..
Any suggestion on which mode to use? Tv? Thanks for all advice! How do we make the background really defocus? So that the focus will be on him? Not sure if u guys understand what I'm tryig to say?
The original box? Cannot ba. Better get a Toyogo plastic box, Tupperware, or the dry-box.
Aiyo sounds like rocket science. Hehe! Why not save up a bit and get a 36l dry cabinet? Save all the trouble and focus on shooting![]()
saDdyJ86 said:oic. why can't put on the original box ah? hahax. anyway, if put 2 sachet of silicon gel will it be too dry? if too dry what will happen to my dslr and lens? thanks.![]()

Tucksoon said:The 24-105 seems like a good choice but you will lose 17-23mm of width. It depends on your shooting preference and style. Another usual suspect is the ever popular 17-55mm which is an excellent walkabout lens swear by many. But of course it has only 55mm of range.
claudius said:Yup. I have read lots of review by 17-55mm users and this would be an excellent lens.
I am intending to upgrade to FF in the next 3 years. Would it be worthwhile for me to get the 17-55mm now and sell it after 3 years?

U need an air tight box.. if not, your silicon gel wouldnt help.. and the original box isn't air tight.. plus, fungus thrive in dark humid places.. like the condition your box might present..
If too dry, the grease might dry up and it might also damage the rubber parts..
If you really can't get a dry cabinet, at least try to get a dry box..
Wow!! This would cost bomb.. Haha.. Don't have the budget for both.
I am planning to get it for my backpacking trip so would like to travel light.
Btw is the 24-70 better than the 24-105?
when u going to upgrade for 70-200, then ur 24-105 will be a waste lo
that is what i think
so i am slowly saving up for 70-200... hehe
i am also using the same kit lens as u.
today just try my first hand on on my 550D, and true enough, i really got stress up. first i try to shoot at my bedroom, and the lens seem like it can't focus, and i press down the capture button, somehow it cant capture. hahax. second, i used AV, and set the aperture value to F3.5, but somehow the shutter speed changed to quite long, like 2 sec. lolx. dslr realli is hard. hahax.
and by the way, if i extend my lens to maybe 50mm, is it possible to set my aperture value to F3.5? cus somehow i cant. hahax.
Oh dear. Have you read the manual? I think you did not right? Haha. Anyway to answer your last question, you can't change the aperture as the kit lens has variable aperture. You can only fix the aperture value if you are using a prime lens. No offence but you really need to read the manual. If you hate reading, why not watch these YouTube videos from this YouTuber Derek to learn the basics before you pull your hair again?![]()
Hmm.. Just to make things clearer, there are zoom lenses with fixed aperture as well..
guess you knew it.. but the way you phrase it might mislead saDdyJ86..

If I were you, I'll still go with the 17-55 first.. 3 years unlike 3 months is not a short time.. but that's just me.. if u feel comfortable losing wider end, go for it..
I guess claudius is looking for a walkabout lens. The lightest 70-200 is the f/4 version. It still weighs 705g. The heaviest beast is the f/2.8 which weighs 1.5kg! From 455g (18-135) to 1.5kg, it's no walkabout in the park
claudius can also consider the value for money Tamron 17-50mm as a general walkabout lens![]()
The 17-55mm holds its price pretty well. Check the BnS section and you will find people selling between $1100 to $1300. I say it's worthwhile if your shooting preference is within the range. If you are a zooming person, I suggest you to stick with 18-135. The 24-105 is great if you are willing lose the 18-23mm width![]()
