Mostly landscape . I don't think will be capturing fast moving objects

550D paired with a Ef-s 10-22 or a tokina 11-16 f2.8 will do the job. But if budget is main concern can consider older models of Dslr maybe 500D with 10-22. Don't really need the f2.8 from the tokina if mostly landscape.

But do provide some allowance. You might start trying event and people and sooner or later want a "faster" lens.

hi guys, i just got a 550D Kit II. it's really a challenge to me, like wondering how come the flash will pop out, and also how to set focus point, f nos, shutter speed so on. lolx. but hope to learn some great tips for a beginner like me. thanks.

If the flash pops up den u r probably on auto mode. Most importantly first u should read up the tons of guides available on Apeture, Shutter speed & ISO. Den try shooting at manual on fixed scenes and get a feel of how each setting affect ur photo.
When u are more comfortable with what each setting does u can shoot at apeture priority or shutter priority (Depending on the subject) den learn about the other settings such as white balance, focus mode, etc.
and in no time u will be able to call urself an beginner

Learn using av or tv mode. That is how u proceed to m mode. I am now learning how to use m mode. So the picture will be consistent.

Yup. I think that would be easier. I started learning with manual and den found aV and tV to be a godsend so its rly up to u.

Use manual mode mostly when you are shooting static objects or scenery/landscape. When you have the time to set f-stops and shutter speed. If shooting ppl or street, I'd really recommend AV mode, as you control the f-stops to get a shallow/wide DOF, and set the brightness of your image (the actual EV). the camera would compensate to follow your brightness settings, by speeding or slowing your shutter speed.

If you photo ppl and start playing with the shutter and with the aperture, ppl tent to lose patience. If shooting street and something nice is there in front of you, you might lose it by the time you are setting everything manually. Therefore, go with AV mode.

by the way, I am using some manual lenses and controlling aperture using the ring on the lens. The camera would only work in AV mode, as it is not aware of what the aperture is set to. But it would compensate to let more/less light using the shutter speed settings.

thanks guys for your wonderful help. well, will be getting my first hand on this coming weekend. hahax. hopefully i dun disappoint my dslr. lolx. btw, i just bought a a silicon gel daiso, it can actually re-activate again when it change from blue to pink by tanning under the hot sun. cus i'm still tight on getting a dry cabinet, so wondering will the silicon gel actually help? what my intention is to store my camera and lens as how it come when i first purchase, which mean will be storing inside the package box, and added perhap 2 silicon gel sachet into it, and keep it into my cupboard. is it a good idea? thanks.

The original box? Cannot ba. Better get a Toyogo plastic box, Tupperware, or the dry-box.

Any suggestion on which mode to use? Tv? Thanks for all advice! How do we make the background really defocus? So that the focus will be on him? Not sure if u guys understand what I'm tryig to say?

Aiyo sounds like rocket science. Hehe! Why not save up a bit and get a 36l dry cabinet? Save all the trouble and focus on shooting

Feel free to ask questions but do read up more before you do so. The 'old birds' can be a little impatient but they mean well. Spoon feeding is not encouraged here. Another good way to learn is to borrow a basic digital photography book from library to read. I'm a newbie to DSLR too

Hello. Basically for a moving subject (your child), what you need is a faster shutter speed to freeze his actions. You can achieve that by using Tv mode, setting the shutter to 1/60 of a second to start off. Tv and Av modes are semi-automatic modes being you control one variable while the camera helps yo with the rest.

To achieve those background defocus effect, you will need to adjust something called aperture to a smaller number one such as f3.5 on the Av mode. (The smaller the f number, the bigger your lens will open and allow more light, the blur-er your background is)
But really, to start off, you can just use the Tv mode of 1/60 then let the camera choose an aperture for you. Just make sure you focus on your child and it should be fine.
Likewise, if you use Av mode, you can choose aperture while the shutter speed is being selected by the camera automatically.
