Initially I thought I needed one. But after I gotten the 18-200mm lens, I find myself using the lens as a support and don't rely so much on the grip.
With some spare cash, I don't mind getting one. :D

wondering how many of my comrades here purchased the battery grip?

I recall seeing one website offering the third party grip and 2 batteries for $140. But cannot remember which website :embrass:

ic.. original ones ~$190 - 200? $60 difference.

$120 is cheap! I remember buying my original one for $200 two months ago; though I don't regret it because I'm using it to somewhat balance my handling of my 15-85 and 430exII.

the main purpose of grip is for portrait type photography.. it's much easier now then before..

am tempted to get one when i purchase my 580ex ii :(

Do anyone know what do the electronic fair @ expo offer for canon 550d.
hows the tripod and dry box or dry cabinet...

HI,

you may want to check out, shuttercentral. they have a thrid party grip. ;)

Are you refering to this?
http://www.shuttercentral.com/store/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=20

I'm considering between that and http://www.linkdelight.com/vmchk/Ph...2i-BG-E8-2xLP-E8-Remote-Cord/flypage.tpl.html

Why is one labelled as BG-E5 and one BG-E8, are they the same? and what does "Li-ion Battery replaces LP-E8 x2" mean?

Hi,
I think it good to have battery grip especially when you have a big palm like me ;) cause i get a firm grip on my dslr when taking a handheld shot...but sometime it quite heavy carrying with len attached...please correct me if I'm wrong

Cheers,

Have anyone tried cleaning your dslr sensors? How do you go about doing so? If you ever change lenses on and off, there'll be dust on sensor.. esp when u take landscape with min aperture, you can see it...

NOOOO this is not the one! they trying to scam... 550D batt and 450D/500D/1000D batt not the same.. batt grip for the 3 cant fit into 550D... phottix offers a 550D battery grip too. redddot selling for $130 cheaper than Canon $200 but i dunno abt the difference in build quality (if any) :\ anyone use the phottix one before?

I hv brochures from ITshows of 2+ years ago :DD seems like canon drop price for 500D from $1445 to $1299 and throw in tripod extra batt 2x8GB SD EOS bag seems like quite a good deal. the 550D now @ $1445 too so i am guessing at ITshow will have roughly the same promo as last years 500D

oh and they also let u buy lenses PWP cheaper. 50mm f/1.8 @ $50?!?!?!?! thats super cheap!

Hope to pick up tips here!!!

Just wanted to check on a few things:

1. Am interested in taking potraits and nature shots. Any reccomendations for the sort of lenses i should buy?

2. Intend to invest in a good flash as well? Any reccomendations.

3. What are some of the must-buys for the camera?

Thanks for any help for this newbie...

Hi, first of all, a big WELCOME here !

I'll got my 550d around few months ago and I'm still a newbie.

1. Am interested in taking potraits and nature shots. Any reccomendations for the sort of lenses i should buy?

It depends on what type of focal length you may want, some prefer 35mm, 50mm, 85mm.
I'd tried out on the 85 f/1.8, but it's to much "zoom in" for me. The 35mm is too wide for me. So I end up with a 50 f/1.8. It's the cheapest lens in the Canon Range, which cost me around the $130.

2. Intend to invest in a good flash as well? Any reccomendations.

Ask yourself, do you have a budget ?
If you don't have a budget, go for the Canon 580 EX II.. there's no wrong.. But if you have a budget, I would say a Nissin Di866 flash.. similar specs compared to the 580 EX II. I'd got a Nissin Di622 instead because I have a budget..

3. What are some of the must-buys for the camera?

Since you wanna take portraits, why don't consider a BATTERY GRIP ?

A TRIPOD when it comes in handy to take night landscapes ?

A DRY CABINET is a must where you can place your equipment in ?

i got mine 2 weeks ago :)

1. yup totally agree with the 50mm f/1.8! rox!

2. i wanted a 420ex but their market price seems to be on the rise :\ opting for a Di622 instead. anyone got a 2nd hand one willing to let go? haha

3. i dunno abt batt grip... the 550D grip abit small for my hand but i think i can live with it without having to splash out $100. tripod is definitely a must! but idk abt dry box... if u use ur equipment very frequently i dun think u'll get fungul grow cos of UV frm sun so yea :)

The street price of a Nissin Di622 is around the $200ish.. I got mine at $180 cos I bought it together with my 550D.

For me, I can't live w/o a Battery Grip.. that's why I'm getting the Original Canon today later..

I would still insist a Dry Cabinet..where you dump all yr cam equipment in.. so u don't need to worry about whether you misplace any of your accessories..

cheers on the grip later :)

I agree with the dry cabinet. It's a must and it takes a higher priority for me than a tripod.
