Hi Guys

Just purchased my 550D about a month ago and still trying to figure out its functions.

Hope to pick up tips here!!!

Just wanted to check on a few things:

1. Am interested in taking potraits and nature shots. Any reccomendations for the sort of lenses i should buy?

2. Intend to invest in a good flash as well? Any reccomendations.

3. What are some of the must-buys for the camera?

Thanks for any help for this newbie...

Hi, first of all, a big WELCOME here !

I'll got my 550d around few months ago and I'm still a newbie.

1. Am interested in taking potraits and nature shots. Any reccomendations for the sort of lenses i should buy?

It depends on what type of focal length you may want, some prefer 35mm, 50mm, 85mm.
I'd tried out on the 85 f/1.8, but it's to much "zoom in" for me. The 35mm is too wide for me. So I end up with a 50 f/1.8. It's the cheapest lens in the Canon Range, which cost me around the $130.

2. Intend to invest in a good flash as well? Any reccomendations.

Ask yourself, do you have a budget ?
If you don't have a budget, go for the Canon 580 EX II.. there's no wrong.. But if you have a budget, I would say a Nissin Di866 flash.. similar specs compared to the 580 EX II. I'd got a Nissin Di622 instead because I have a budget..

3. What are some of the must-buys for the camera?

Since you wanna take portraits, why don't consider a BATTERY GRIP ?

A TRIPOD when it comes in handy to take night landscapes ?

A DRY CABINET is a must where you can place your equipment in ?

As what odyssey mention, you can also consider a remote shutter release. :)

Welcome to the club!

Where should I get one?

can get it from any camera shop. CP, MS color, etc.

My friend said he got a cheap one from carrefour, any caution against that?

IIRC, carrefour sells the Digi-Cabi dry cabinets. RRP is $118 for the AD-036 (30L model) but if got 10% discount (5% POSB everyday card, 5% carrefour discount), it'll be really worth. But last I heard, the 30L one is out of stock.

Most people here own a Digi-Cabi. I'm using the 30L one too.

I'm confused.
anyway, haven't place order yet.
:)

NOOOO this is not the one! they trying to scam... 550D batt and 450D/500D/1000D batt not the same.. batt grip for the 3 cant fit into 550D... phottix offers a 550D battery grip too. redddot selling for $130 cheaper than Canon $200 but i dunno abt the difference in build quality (if any) :\ anyone use the phottix one before?

the photix build quality is superb.. my hands feels more comfortable to grip the battery grip then the body

never try the original battery grip. but the body grip is too small and thin.. this phottix battery grip is fat.. haha; just nice in my palm

Anyone interested to get this?

DSLR "Condom" :bsmilie:
They need a few quantities pre-order before they decide to bring it in.

Of course, myself is interested. :P

550D sensor is really disgustingly amazing: ISO6400, only resized & water marked. EXIF is intact, you can view it via a browser plugin.

Soft due to lens. Noise reduction is off. :D
Lens is Tamron 28-75mm at F2.8.

This softness is kind of good for portraits in my POV.
