Any kind soul out there knows why 580EX cannot change from TTL to ETTL by pressing the "Mode" button when attached on an EOS 5D Mark II? Some setting problem? There is no loose contact at the Hotshoe. Could it be an upgrading of firmware to 2.09? Thank you!

Thank you guys for your replies. I have set all Cn Functions on both the flash and the camera to the original but the flash still goes full blast over exposing all shots. The camera cannot detect the flash and the flash display shows TTL all the time. Will be sending to the service centre because no idea what to do next .... maybe really faulty hardware...

Hi Greatspider,

Not sure if you have tried this but

01) Mount the flash
02) in the camera menu got to ->3rd Yellow Spanner Icon.
03) scroll down to "External Speedlite control" and select it,
04) in the next page, scroll down to "Flash C.Fn settings" and select it,
05) using the thumb wheel, scroll to Item 5, which should be "Flash metering mode.
05) the "0:E-TTL II should be Blue, if it is not then, press the set button to activate to make changes, and use thumbwheel to scroll and highlight "0: E-TTL II"
06) Once highlighted press Set and should be ok...

Hope this works...

Hi Greatspider,

One more thing just incase you have done the steps i mentioned earlier and it is still not working... Had this same problem with my sony camera... THe problem was dirty contacts.... Just use a cotton bud dip in nail polish remover and clean the contacts of the flash and the hotshoe mount... hope this also works...

Hi,

Can't wait for 5D mark III :P
So, I just bought a new set of 5D Mark II which came with 24-105mm F4

Congrats on the purchase.... Welcome to the family....

hi guys, I am a proud new owner of the superb 5D mk2 :) and just gotten myself a 24-70mm f2.8L to go with the camera as well!

Currently I am looking for a speedlite to complement my set-up but I can't decide between the 580EX II and 580EX. While the mk2 definitely has its improvements above the mk1, both seems to be pretty much the same in performance. and the price difference is quite huge too (to me).

to help me decide on which one to purchase. I'm wondering if u guys can give me any determining factors between the both, making it a conclusive decision on why I should get the mk2 instead of the mk1. thanks you so so so much for your help! :)

and by the way I do freelance photography, so these equipments are kinda part of my rice-bowl :) (I used to be a Nikon user, just switched over to Canon recently).

i dun think u can buy 580EX brand new now. the price difference is due to new (580EXII) and used set (580EX). You will not be able to tell how extensive the previous owner used his 580EX. The last time I heard, changing the tube for 580EXII costs $100+.

Yea.. that was also part of my concern. Advice from my friends is to purchase a brand new speedlite instead, cause you never know the condition of the speedlite if you were to buy it 2nd hand.

Thank you biggorilla :D The circuit board in the camera for operating the flash was faulty... replacement cost about $300+ ... This will be the first and the last time that I buy a second hand camera. Come to think of it, when we were using film cameras, the lens was the most important part. Now for DSLR, due to the sensor and circuit complexity, it seems that the body is now as important as the lens. Maybe can still buy 2nd hand lens but 2nd hand body... hmm... not unless the price is halved! You'd never know how the previous owner used it...

I bought my 5D2 2nd hand as well and there was this one occasion where I suddenly couldn't change my aperture size regardless being in av mode or manual mode and it turns out that my lens 'suddenly' was not attached properly. the weird thing was I have been shooting for 2-3hrs prior to that happening and I didn't even change out my lens or anything, it just mysteriously became like that.

kinda worries me... eventhough I am not facing that issue anymore after it happened once... imagine that happening to you while covering an AD wedding!

is it possible to send our cameras to Canon for 'servicing'? to check on the camera overall? and what would the fee be like?

I know its easier said then done but sometimes it is best to have a 2nd body when you cover weddings, in case one body starts to give problems...

Usually I bring 2... one with 24-105 + flash the other with 50/85mm lens with/withouht flash...

... make sense to get 2 bodies this case... just that it seems high risk getting a 2nd hand... If "suay suay" the sensor died after purchasing (because the last owner use it as a spare camera for mainly video taking and that the sensor could get very hot after prolong use), the original few hundred dollars of "good" bargain would go down the drain...

i just bought my 5D mark 2. when i compared with my 60D with same speed, F and ISO. i get 60D got brighter pic than 5D. i thought 5D should have a brighter picture than 60D? or may be i just get a wrong idea. its almost 2 stop brighter. can someone explain to me. thx at advance

Camera LCD screen or on your computer screen?

Either way, most prob it's due to metering. 5D Mark II has a bigger metering area and a metering system different from 60D. You need to understand how this camera works before you can achieve good results.

But once you get the hang of it, you'll never go back to your 60D for sure.

Finally I upgraded to 5Dmk2 with 24-105 kit!! =D

hi guys may I know wad firmware are u on? I've checked the canon.com.SG website and I can't find the firmware for 5D2... could only find for 5D.. are they using the same firmware?

I'm currently on 2.0.9
