I'm a new entrant to the 5D Mk2 club. Couldnt wait anymore for the supposed 5D Mk3.
I have several lenses which i have been using on my cropped sensor DSLR (which i still like very much) and they are still useable on the FF, namely the EF24-105 f4.0L and several Canon/Sigma primes. One of my favourite lens on my 550D is the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8. Its the perfect walkabout lens and one i always take with me overseas. Obviously its not suitable for the 5D Mk2 being an EF-S lens. I am therefore looking for something similar for my FF. The logical choice i thought would have been the Canon EF 24-70 f2.8L however this youtube review by artoftheimage (see link below) seems to suggest that its a very unreliable lens and that the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 IF EX DG HSM is not only a technically superior lens but also much cheaper. I'm all for spending less especially if IQ is as good or better than the Canon equivalent. I have a Sigma 50mm f1.4 so i'm quite familiar with Sigma quality.

I'm sure there are 5D Mk2 owners who have actually owned either one or both of these lenses. Would appreciate feedback from those who have actually used these lenses.

chihuahua, The EF24-70 is an excellent lens, albeit a bit heavy. Most would use this as a general purpose walkabout lens. The sharpness and bokeh are top-quality. So, I don't think it should be dismissed as any sub-standard piece of glass. Get it, you won't regret!

I cannot comment about the 24-70L in actual usage but I seriously doubt it to be as bad as this guy calls it and he's constantly repeating himself like a bad LP.
Of all the L lenses I've used, not a single one of them is a lemon, and most of them I don't buy over the counter and check.
There are plenty of satisfied users of this lens out there, just check out slrgear or fm reviews.
If you are into zooms, certain consider that and the 24-105L - there are pros and cons for both.
The main drawback of this lens is its weight and it loses out to primes for speed and PQ.

It was addressed with a very early firmware update in 2009. The black dot only appeared under special lighting circumstances

Hi peeps !
Just want to ask around if you guys faced this problem with your camera. My camera version is 2.09
When I shoot at vertical position (Anti-clockwise, right hand on top) , sometimes my camera will just freeze....meaning it can't focus or meter and the info in the viewfinder is all gone. The top LCD info is still there.
It is rather irritating during important shoots !

Any kind soul out there knows why 580EX cannot change from TTL to ETTL by pressing the "Mode" button when attached on an EOS 5D Mark II? Some setting problem? There is no loose contact at the Hotshoe. Could it be an upgrading of firmware to 2.09? Thank you!

I think you are already using eTTL...the cam will sense the light from the scene and correctly expose accordingly.

some prefer to use old mf focus lens (other brands). else u can use any 50mm (f1.8 or f1.4 or even f1.2)
