Depends on your usage, Di866 might be good enough, it also has TTL and HSS too.

Pros for 580exII would be better built quality (weather seal), faster recharge (1/2 to 2/3 at full power).. compatibility with ST-E2 for TTL off-camera flash etc..

Di866 is more powerful though (world's most powerful flash they claim), and quite alot cheaper :) Built quality is above average, definitely better than the china yongnuos at least. It's got decent recharge times... faster than the old 550EX. You can fire them with RF 602s or other 3rd party triggers like Phottix and Pixel etc... reliable and cheap, if you're on budget.

Of course, if no budget, don't need say. Just whack, get the 580EXII and PWs :D

Cheers

If you are thinking of getting the Nissin, then my advise is not to try out the 580EX2 else you may want to buy it instead.

Something about the Nissin flash:

  • You can only use the AF-assist beam if your focus point is set to the center.
  • Not all function is configurable on your 5DM2, you would need to go thru the menu on the flash.
  • Although it have a higher guide number, the refresh rates for event shooting is slow compared to the Canon
  • Built quality & colour temperature (different from Canon)

The above is based on my personal hand-on test of the Nissin Di866 and Canon 580EX2, if I am mistaken please kindly correct me. Thanks. :)

hi users here, any body had tesed 35mm f2 lens on 5d2? how was it? cos the review said not recommended. by the-digital-picture.

Hi bro,
Since you owe both, could you share how different is the colour temperature of the di866 vs the 580exII? Is it warmer?

Thank you all for the very informative feedbacks on the flashes.

I didn't purchased the di866, in fact I got 2 x 580ex2 instead. But I am fortunate enough to be loan the flash (Nissin) for an extensive period of time for my testing.

Based on my experience of the Nissin, I need to use a gel to "correct" the flash temperature or use custom WB. Of course, it maybe based on personal preference too.

But given the price of the Nissin, I had also recommended it to friends who gel their flashes or shoot mainly in RAW. :)

Used the 35 f2 on a 5D, and the corners are soft. Other than that, the lens is sharp in the center wide open. It's very light and a joy to use, except for the slightly loud focusing.

Recommended or not, it's entirely up to your own needs.

you mentioned in other thread that it produced serverly bad viginetting, i am worried, dont want to spend so much on 35f1.4.

2nd question, some said sharpness improved with bigger apeture like f4, do i better off stay with 24-105 f4?

I was considering di866 too but worried. 580ex is indeed pricey ex.

How much best bargain you guys managed to get? Been struggling in low-light. No build-in flash.

Only way to pump Iso

at last got my 5Dm2 yesterday but couldn't try it out as the kit lens surrendered to a fellow CS bro who book it. my 16-35 will only come tomorrow.

anyway, charge the battery, read the manual and figure the body without the lens today.

hope to join one of those basic practical course soon. those now available, the timings are not right for me :(

any bro here can give some practical lessons for a small fee? ;)

you can get the nissin flash from SLRR. around +-$390. Much cheaper than RDP prices.

Firstly, I can live with the vignetting. Secondly, the sharpness wide open is good enough for me and I need the f1.4. Whether or not the lens suits you is really up to your individual needs.

anyone of you 5dMkII users think that 5dMKIII will be coming out soon??

if your current set serve your needs, then i think mark3 coming out or not will not be a concern unless you intend to purchase mark2 and heard that 3 is on the way, then will be wiser to wait, otherwise....:dunno:
