Have a question about the AF beep alert for my 5D and hope fellow 5D users can advise. Lately i find that the beep alert seems to be softer and i'm wondering if the function relies on the clock battery. Can any one confirm if the AF beep runs on the main battery or the clock battery.

I really don't have an answer to your question Silas but you raise another good question. Has anyone replaced their clock battery? If so, how difficult is it and where is it located?

Actually that's the backup battery and mine still runs well since the day i bought it.

I switch between beep and silent shooting frequently. Hence I appreciate both for their merit and shortcomings.

I've not replaced mine before for both my 5D and 50D hence am checking to see the possible reason for the weakening of the beep. If i'm not wrong, the 5D clock battery needs to be removed with a mini screwdriver unlike the newer camera models. It's under the ports where you connect your USB and remote shutter release. What do u mean back up battery? Do you mean that the beep is powered by the clock battery?

 Somebody please enlighten me....I need to see the light....

I think the batteries are the ones which control the whole camera's function.Clock battery only for the clock.

Your so called clock battery is actually a backup battery. It retains all your settings when your main battery is taken out of the camera. It's actually a flat lithium battery.

Thanks Silas for the reference to page 41 of the 5D manual. I had actually taken out my 5D manual earlier to find information about the back-up / clock battery but couldn't find it.

It's interesting that Canon refers to it by 2 names:

1. Date/Time battery
2. Back-up battery

Also, interesting is the estimated length of time that the battery is expected to last.... 5 years! Since the 5D was introduced over 5 years ago, I guess this information will be timely for many of us.

For anybody wondering... the battery that needs to be replaced is called - CR2016. Silas is correct in saying that it is located on the side of the camera where the USB and accessories ports are. A small Philipps screwdriver is needed to gain access to the battery.

Oh i will be staying at their minsu for half my trip and i am not very sure if they have net access. but my last few days will be back in taipei so definitely will have net access. :)

I don't have problem with the sound, or have i ever replaced the battery.

I do however have problem with the upload folders.. eg: i shoot on lets say the 1st of Nov when i upload it ill have my images split into 2 dates, 1st and 2nd Nov.

My date/time settings are correct tho..

Hi 5d users! Pardon me, but wad are the major differences between 5d classic and 5d2? Maybe in terms of image quality, colors and AF. thanks!

I don't own the 5D MkII but I do own the 5D classic. Here are my thoughts:

1. I think in terms of IQ and auto-focus both the 5D MkII and classic are about the same.
2. From what I've read, colours are slightly better rendered on the 5D classic but the MkII has the advantage of better low light capability.
3. The MkII also has the advantage with cropping flexibility due its 21mp sensor.
4. The other big advantage of the MkII is its far superior LCD.
5. The 5D classic of course is over $1000 cheaper and there are still opportunities to get one with a low shutter count.

That tiny battery is meant to keep the clock running and settings of the camera preserved once the camera is off or main battries removed. I did replace mine manually before which just goes to show how old my set was =p
