Official 5D User Thread - Part 2

Oh my gosh... what a spetacular photograph! I was just at the Gardens-by-the-Bay last week before my return to Toronto. I got a few decent photographs but nothing to compare with what you've managed! I walked for hours to find a good vantage point and found a few that were alright but nothing that compares to your photograph.

Would you mind sharing:

i) your shooting location?
ii) EXIF info?

Again, congrats on a great photograph!

(Glad to see that this thread is undead!)

Raydio, Thanks!

i. I saw this composition 3 times ... 2 on Flickr, and 1 by my photobuddy - wonglp. But I have not attempted it. Chanced upon the place again yesterday, and I was sweating profusely due to the walking and the still evening air after/before rain, I knew that the waters are going to be really still and went to the dragonfly lake to take this shot. It's at the end of start/end of the wooden walkway.

ii. 30s exposure (too long), 5 - 6 image stitches (I think all it needs is 4), f13, iso 50

Great to see that so many people still love their Classics :3 I love mine to bits and it has rewarded me with many keepers and has been a realiable workhorse! To the classics!

Just a note, the 5D's parts may soon be obsoleted by Canon.

I recently checked in with Canon to see if they still have parts and it seems that they do, but in limited quantities. I was toying with the idea of stocking up parts like the shutter box assembly once they start to obsolete it and get rid of stock. Anyone else here with the same crazy idea? :P

Good idea, only worry is that the lubricants may ceased up if not used for too long, then it's money wasted. I do believe they will still service the 5D for at least a couple more years. If I am not wrong, they still service 10D and 20D too, so no reason to stop servicing a well loved model.

I think since mid last year, they already stop keeping parts locally. Many parts need to special order from Japan, and require certain waiting time. But I think they will continue to service the camera for general issues right?

I have come to believe that Canon, as a general rule of thumb, will continue to provide parts and services for their older equipment for about a decade depending on the demand (these are equipment that have been replaced by the newer mark I or mark II, equipment like the 50mm f1.4 however, though from 1993, giving it an age of 19 years, should still be available to be serviced or fixed (only makes sense as there isn't a 50mm f1.4 Mk II yet) ). After the timeframe, Canon will not help you. I have a 17-35mm f2.8L from 1996 i got second hand and it was partially damaged (extremely tight zoom ring requiring so much force to turn, the focal length will jump from 17 to 35. So the lens kinda became a 17 or 35). The previous owner mentioned that he approached Canon for help, but was turned down as Canon no longer has parts for the 17-35 due to the lack of demand and the success of its successors the 16-35mm f2.8L MkI and MkII and basically cause the lens has been around for nearly 16 years. I ended up having to fix the lens myself and after a rather long time with a file and Vaseline, no more problems! But i am getting off topic. To sum up. Servicing for equipment of all ages (sensor cleaning and other minor services) should still be available but repairs such as replacing a damaged LCD screen, etc for an equipment >10 years, may be no longer available.

Apologies for going on and on. I just really love my old equipment and its a real treat to see other people who do too and it gets me real excited. Apologies once again :P

That is true. But i am sure possible storage solutions may be availabe? But its just an idea. May be quite awhile more before they even decide to obsolete it. True true, i believe Canon will spport this well loved model :)

I think even if we have a solid top of line dry cabinet, if we don't use the equipment for prolong periods, the parts do face risk of ceasing up.

Just wanna add that I use both Nikon and Canon systems. The reason why I no longer use this camera is mainly due to sensor dust. I shoot quite a fair bit and the frequent trips to CSC to clean up sensor really annoys me. Time is precious you know :p

However, if I were to just compare picture quality for printouts no bigger than A3 size, i will rank the output from this camera as top. It is that good. It only lose out on technology and maybe to a certain extent, high ISO output. This camera is truly a legend, and I missed it a lot.

Hmm, shall look into possible solutions in my spare time :) Nice! Yea, it gets quite dusty sometimes and the lack of an auto dust cleaning function doesnt help. Actually, cause i own an A2 photo printer for work, i have made prints sized A2 for myself and others (in which a 5D classic was used for the shots) the picture qulaity turned out aboslutely alright, it actually looks pretty darn good if i may add. So i cautiously say that up to A2 size, the 5D classic has a fighting chance in terms of output. Just my opinion :P Oh and its still around for now :) so dont have to miss it just yet :P

I agree about the sensor dust. It's a bit of a pain to clone those out. I need to start printing some of my images to see if it's as good as it seems on the computer at 800px.

More love for the 5Dc whilst it last ...

never had much problem with the sensor dust. so bad meh.

anyway im on m2 liao.

Sensor dusts are inevitable for DSLRs and mirrorless cams. My 5D has some tiny specks which are only visible around f/16 but no issues. I even have a tiny one around the center which according to CSC, is in between the sensor and low-pass filter.

What's the cost of cleaning for the 5D at CSC?

It used to be free but now they charge in the vicinity of $20 or $30. One day I'm going to learn to do this myself and save some cash. I hear that its not hard... you just have to be careful.

What do they usually clean?
I know they'll clean the sensor. What about the viewfinder?

VF cleaning is $32.10. Sensor cleaning is $21.40.

Last time when my VF gets dirty, ,I just buy a Ee-S one from showroom and ask the CSC to change for me (because I don't already have the Ee-S). I found out that if you are asking to clean the VF, CSC will actually just change the default focusing screen to a new one. They don't actually clean it. Maybe that's why it's more expensive then sensor cleaning.

Since owning this grand old dame it has given me immense pleasure with it's picture quality ableit it's older technology. Like to share some poster size 20" x 30" pictures from this truelly classic camera. It never fails me :)

Agree. Last time when I asked CSC to clean my focusing screen they just replaced it, costs $11.

Anyone tried printing via Pictbridge with this camera? I kept getting a "Cannot Print" error and the manual doesn't say anything about this error.

nope. Just a guess but it might not be supported just like how they stopped support for the cable -> eos utility after xp.

Yes true, am now still using an XP home series laptop to tether for shooting. New Window 7 series cannot work with the 5D.
