Official 5D User Thread - Part 2

lol. 5D2 and 7D considered old already right?

24 - 105 I've seen at 750 - 800 on bns these days

I'd still buy new, all my equipment are bought new...don't like used products.

I'd still go for 24-105 for range. Perhaps the new 24-70 f/4 IS has better IS and optics. But since it's going to be a travel lens, range is more of a priority.

I like 24 105 for the size n range. A good travel lens. My thought was a 24 70 f2.8 ii n a 24 105..

i rather go for either 24 70 or 24 105 + another prime with focal length of your preference.

The 24-105 should be sufficient, no point getting another 24-70 as its range has been covered by the 24-105.

I've had the 24-105 for about 2 years. When I first got it, I was amazed by its sharpness and colour. It continues to be the workhouse lens on my 5D3.

The 24 -70mm f2.8 for events.... n travel use the 24 - 105mm.

But IS can come in handy for events.

Mmm.... though IS is useful for events, but I thought f2.8 is important for events???? Allow you to isolate the subject.... but I know have some people shoot with f4 lens for events too.........

Usually, if I shoot events, I go for flash, so the IS is not that critical.......

Many people have this misconception that f/2.8 is the 'ideal' aperture for many things such as events, portraits and is an all-rounder. I've shot in many events using f/4 or even f/5.6, some with flash. Try shooting in very dim conditions using f/2.8, which is also not enough. In cases like that, i'll deploy my prime.

For portraits, I can understand the need for fast prime. For events, f2.8 offers more flexibility than a f4...... but this is also dependent on people style... sometimes, you just need a little isolation and f2.8 is enough, and with sufficient lighting....

For shooting in dim condition.... I think must use flashes.... unless you meant you shoot with ambiance lighting?

With newer camera bodies, you can also up ISO.....the 6D & 5DIII look good up to ISO 1600/3200.....

So a few factors... it depends on the photographer style, and condition of the lighting.....

My main staple was the CZ 28-85mm F3.3/4.0 in film days. Now it contiuned to digital with CZ N24-85mm F3.5/4.5
for all events. Sharing an example and in order to rope in the ambient lighting manual set @F3.5 in 24mm Iso 320 1/25sec handheld.Flash bounced.

If i'm shooting in dim indoor lighting, it'll be just my 50mm, else the 70-300. Works just as well.

Well...my 5D's ISO in dim indoor lighting is still up to 1600, at 3200, gets a little noisy already. But mainly in such events i'll keep my ISO between 400 to 800 max.

For indoor low light situations, I usually get away with using my Nikon 85 1.4 ais and my Voigtlander 40 f2 (Nikon Mt) on my 5D classic...If I need a bit more light, then its Elinchrom Quadra to the rescue...He He

for quick af shots, I love the little Canon pancake 40mm f2.8 lens that I just got..
