ok. timberwolfy gave me quite some details about extension tubes, but the focsing desitance it gives is not far enuf(becomes like my 18-50). reason i need a macro lens is that i dun want to go too close to subject yet still achieve 1:1(or somewhere near).

so right now, i have to make a choice: tele or macro? i cant really say which one i need more as in the first place, i did not buy them at first due to me not using then often. but now, i find some cases when i need them. so which one first? so hard to decide.

I see u dont even know what u want ley...marco to me is the better choice..500mm on the other hand...still never try portriats with it...mmmm maybe tis weekend..

get a 200mm G plus extension tube like Sulhan

get the macro first lah.

you use your sigma 70-200 and the 2x TC, you can still get to 400mm f5.6. stop down to f8 for sharpness and crop a little, you get 500 f8 already lor. can make do for now.

actually, what sort of close-up are you trying to shoot? for insects, the tamron 90mm or the sony/minolta 100mm are good. give you some working distance. but you may find that the focal length (~150mm on a dlsr) is a bit too long for other things, e.g. product shoots. that kind of stuff maybe you should check with dca or agetan what they recommend.

the 28 f2... very rare and sought after. suggest you hold on to it unless you're sure you don't mind letting it go. sony will release the 500 mirror and the 50 and 100 macros, so you know they'll always be available if you need them. (i say this with a :bheart: cos i also very gian that lens)

haha, true though, sony dun have 28 f2, hmmmmmm....... but right now, i am not planning the macro as first pirority is because my sigma 18-50 is still sufficent for my current macro needs, it is only in some instances when i need to shoot closeups but i cannot go too close, esp some physics project and exhibition. for eg, my physics teacher gave me a plasma ball, i wanted to shoot the branches from the central core, but 18-50 does not give me the distance and 70-200 focusiing distance is too far.

500mm on the other hand is something my setup doesn't have(400mm is just too soft at big apertures, and bulky too). for this, it is also a start for me in bird photography(which was one of my aims when i bought a DSLR), and also, to fit in those empty holes in those instances when i missed some nice shots and wished that i had a light super telephoto.

speaking of which, i should post some pics i took of the plasma ball soon.:)

Get some extension tube, the 23mm should work well with your 18-50 to give you the ability to get real close to subject. Problem is, hard to find. You loose light but not quality as it's "air" lens. :)

Try a 75-300 lens plus an extension tube... good range and close focusing distance. Most of these 75-300 lens have some macro built-in as well although not a true macro lens (i.e. not at least 1:1)...

U dun really need a very long lens for birding if u are content with the birds around your neighbourhood... of course Sugnei Buloh is a different story... can always try the Tokina 80-400mm 2nd hand... decent enough although it weighs a ton...

woah, 75-300 + tube can buy tamron 90mm macro liao.

btw, here's some pics of my plasma ball. got it as a gift from my phsyics teacher for "being the most inqusitive student and a joy to teach":bsmilie: .

U have the added advantage of having a decent telephoto end... btw, a 2nd hand 75-300 from either Sigma, Tamron or KM is not that expensive... extension tubes also can try to find 2nd hand...

As for your shots... crop, crop, crop... square format looks better...

actually, crop did not really work very well, when crop, the "black and darkness" filled area gets reduce dramatically, causing the dark and eerie feeling to be less ominous. when i tried cropping, it looked like some avatar:bsmilie: . but then again, i just post these photos for fun, this plasma ball no matter how you take always looks good.:)

No I mean crop to a square format... leave a black border around the sphere... u shot it with a very large aperture I guess... so the 3D effect is a bit lost...

yeah lah, i want to make the black area very very big, is like imagine the bg colour of CS to be black, like no border like that. regarding 3D............

ah. here's what i mean:

the white background of CS overthrows the black now, so not that nice.

anyway, just enjoy the purple lights of the ball. this pic not really posted for those arty farty ones.

If u have seen some of sulhan's macro shots, the insects look almost 3D... I'm referring to that effect... basically the edge contrast is obvious but controlled such that the object stands out... I feel that the plasma strands could be the same... but I suppose they are moving as well so that might create a bit of motion blur leading to a softer edge and thus losing the 3D effect...

do a border lah, u form a white border then another thin black border, so your pic dun look so dull...

nah, just posting for fun.

anyway, do you think selling my 28 prime and the vertical grip can get me a 500mm reflex?

also, what do you think about the bigma? size, price and focal range aside, do you think it is a better choice over the reflex? things like sharpness, CA, AF speed etc.
