Reflection by the Bay

Single RAW exposure using GND0.6

#162

Single JPEG image (new camera a bit fumble and forgot to switch back to RAW after shooting in JPEG yesterday) using GND0.9+ND0.9 with no in-camera saturation and no pp.

Debutant because this is the first shot done on my Pentax K5+Sigma AF 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM.

This is shot in JPEG with no saturation, no photoshop, just out-of-camera JPEG image straight uploaded with watermark that's all.

This is a first shot I made after changing over to Pentax system. This was shot using Pentax K5 with Sigma AF 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM. For those who know, I was using Canon 5D mark ii with EF 17-40mm f/4 before this. Some remarked: why downgrade? I feel that to say I downgraded would be an insult to the Pentax system. I feel that I still have much more to learn to properly utilise this wonderful camera. I don't care if K5ii is coming out. A good camera will still be a good camera, the limiting factor (as cliche as it sounds) lies behind the camera.

Had a self-imposed break for a breather while changing system. :bsmilie:

Hi Manita, thanks for the explanation. I did not spot-metered for various spots so did not get the right exposures. The vignetting probably can be rid if i took another exposure and blended. Yea still learning my way with the big stopper!
I am learning too and learn as much as I can during this school holiday. After that, it will be very busy at school and no more time to do this... You know....:)

Colours of the Night

Manually blended 4 exposures using ND0.9

This image is shot as part of my night photography project so had to work around certain restrictions. The image is as what you see, the manual blending of exposure was only to help control the highlights which were blown and the area of which the masking was done is extremely small. I could have just presented a single RAW exposure but could not get over the blown highlights. The colours which the Pentax K5 and the Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM can get is quite impressive. I tried shooting this scene with 5D2 and I do prefer the outcome given by the Pentax.

Road to Bankruptcy

Manually blended 2 exposures using GND0.6+GND0.9 inverted

Third reshoot of this scene. With this reshoot, I am using the inversion of GND on this scene for the first time. Finally managed to control the light trails, especially for the head light which I find is of a more pleasing colour and intensity when I apply the GND on the lower half of the frame.

Well done Nitewalk! This is a beautiful picture. Your photoshop skill has surpassed your photography skill. ;)

I must shoot this view sometime soon, haven't tried it yet. Have you considered cropping to 3:4 format from the bottom? It might remove some of the space at the top, which doesn't seem to add to the picture.

I am aware of the redundant spaces at the top, but I wasn't so sure I'd want any bit of the trails to be taken out or the lamp posts to be cropped away at the same time because of the cropping. The lamp post i tried to align them in a way that each on both sides appear to be facing one another. Trying to rework the bottom on the other hand as the 5-stops of GND really took out the road making it quite under-exposed. Anyway, just be careful when shooting here because it is in the middle of the road and sometimes the drivers do honk at me because it is quite dangerous. :bsmilie:

Thanks for dropping by! :)

Hehehe, not too bad la, got road divider... I remember having to run to make space for motorcycles for one of the shots in Paris... Had to stand out from where the road divider ended because there were these ugly road makers in the foreground.

Anyways, just to clarify, I didn't mean to suggest cropping away any of the sides. The aspect ratio now is about 2:3, you can afford to change this to 3:4 (i.e. shorter) which would remove the top (i.e. as mentioned earlier, cropping from the bottom) - that is, if you intend to keep to any "conventional" ratios (I usually do). Otherwise, you can just crop away the top, that also works. This should not affect the trails or lampposts.

You can also try doing layer blending which would allow for more control over the light trails - can even blend multiple layers to "multiply" the trails if need be. Cheers!

Road to Bankruptcy Reworked

Credits to MGohzxc for her critique and explanation as well as reworking on my image to give me a clue on how the final image should turn out to be. I have picked up quite a lot of skills today from working and reworking on Road to Bankruptcy

Credits to edutilos- for the suggestion to go 4:3 for this and it really eliminated the unnecessary sky

Just want to acknowledge them for taking the effort to leave their thoughts and explanation which is very helpful in giving me a different perspective. My own perspectives, as much as we always are advised to self-critique, will ultimately be just one perspective thus it is always valuable to know the perspectives of others.

Love by the Quay

I sought to include human elements in my shots. Architectures, as much as it appear lifeless, is just a desolate structure without human. Designed and built by human, placing human with architectures in shots is something which I will seek to achieve when it is meaningful to do so.

When I observed this couple watching sunset, I felt this is the shot I wanted to make. I placed this couple along the bottom third line and on the left third of the frame and pushed the exposure higher.

Central Trails

Manually blended 2 exposures using no filters

Shot this as part of my night photography project. All along, I had presented traffic trails and the trails left by the flyer was a different take. Vehicular traffic aside, this is a presentation of boat trails and aptly so due to the location of Clarke Quay.

Dazzling City

Manually blended 2 exposures using GND0.6

Another work for my night photography project, this time including two types of light trails, i.e. boat trails and laser trails from the laser show at MBS. Additional exposure was recorded to control the highlights and increase the midtone contrast.

Nice shot! Great vantage point :)

Clarke Quay

Manually blended 5 exposures using GND0.6 (4 exposures) and GND0.6 inverted (1 exposure)

Totally doesn't please me. I have always found it difficult to compose this scene. Still not a composition which pleases me, however bearing in mind the parameters I have set for myself for the project, I have to settle for this. Hence, I left this as the last shot in the series for Clarke Quay for my night photography project. Of all shots in the Clarke Quay series, this composition is the one which I like the least and yet the most important as it carries the name of this location that is Clarke Quay. There are some technical mistakes as well and it totally bothers me. Thinking of a reshoot but the thought of spending one precious sunset to reshoot a scene that I have little love for seems a little extravagant.

Stormy Existence

Single RAW exposure using GND0.6+GND0.9

Tried to test out the +1EV technique for GND stacking and wanted a more dramatic feel so pushed the limits and stacked two GND filters to get a maximum of 5 stops reduction.

Never liked the neutral feeling I get from 0EV and want to try neutral saturation for once. There is no saturation done in post-processing, something which I always wanted to do but never quite got it on any Canon bodies.

Aging Modernisation

Manually blended 7 exposures using GND0.6 inverted

There are quite a number of old architectures in Chinatown and of all, I chose this two as the subject. Older generation will be familiar with the theatre. Shot this on the road divider and used more exposure to control the trails as the traffic flow is quite uneven. Unlike some roads and other situations, there are quite a number of lanes and for some reason, the smooth flow of traffic for each lane comes at different timing. Thus I chose to record a few more exposures to be safe and tried to even out the trails. The last in the chapter for Chinatown.

Crossing Paths

HDR image of 2 exposures tone-mapped using no filters

Same angle as edutilos' #353. Was contemplating between cropping and not cropping the foreground and in the end decided not to.
