Nissin Di866 Problems

I got the item yesterday and tried reading the manual, but I'm a bit confused about off camera shooting. Can it be done wireless without a 2nd master flash, ie using the 550d's builtin flash? Or do I require additional hardware, such as a wireless trigger? Or a hotshoe sync cord?

If I am not wrong, it can be set to optical slave. Personally I still prefer using a radio trigger.

Thanks. Thought so. Which model of radio trigger should I look at? I'm also looking for an umbrella setup. Guess I'll have to do some legwork. ;p

I am using one with a built-in umbrella holder at the receiver.

Hey Kenneth. Sorry didn't check your earlier post regarding posting some pics. Too busy. Nyway, I'm using those brandless PT-04 radio triggers. Around $40-$50 per set. So far I have no probs with it. For shoot thru umbrellas, pls get it from Daiso. $2 each. Its good enough. Happy shooting!

Daiso brolly are really small, looks like a typical umbrella, u can get one to experiment, just be awared of its limitations. have fun!

Personally I prefer Brolly Box instead of brolly (umbrella), as I I don't like the split light effort from a shoot thru umbrella.

I kind of like the effect with the bounce card, but when shooting in the vertical format, the flash bounce orientation is wrong. Is there a device which allows you to maintain the upright bounce flash when shooting vertical orientation?

Can always try Gary Fong. It is one of the better accessories for light diffuser.

I've just bought a Di866 for my Canon 60D. My problem is that when I use the Di866 as a wireless external flash with the built in flash (master) disabled, both the 866 and the built in flash fired. This happened despite following the instructions from the manuals of both the camera and the flash.

there are brackets which can attach onto your camera to mount the flash on the vertical upright. then the flash will be triggered via ttl cord

Your built in flash on the 60D is required to fire in order to communicate TTL info and also to trigger the off camera Nissin flash. The flash output should be insignificant if you have already disabled it.

I got the Demb diffuser pro instead. It acts as a diffuser, small lightbox, and can be configured for portrait/landscape orientation. Pretty happy with it.

Hi Anson, I think you mentioned in one post that the color temp for the 866 is somewhat warmer than the 580II.

If I was going to get a 2nd flash for a 2 softbox setup, would the diff color be obvious? Meaning that I would have to stick to the 866 for such a setup.

On a Nikon D90, this flash, when in TTL mode, will freeze after one shot if the lens is longer than 105mm. It will also not fire for that shot.

Under the same body/lens config, the lens will occasionally not fire in Manual mode (even if it is already charged)

Personally I have not put the both flash together in a softbox setup before. But your softbox had a dual layer diffusion. You can easily correct the CT during PP easily.

if u set EV instead of auto on the flash and there is a positive or negative EV set on the flash, it will override the camera settings and it will be greyed on your camera menu.

hi i am using canon 50D and nissin di866 flash. my setting for shutter sync is grey out, unable to change. is it compatibility issue with the flash?
any 50D and nissin di866 user can verify?

thanks
