Nissin Di866 Problems

The Nissin Di866 couldn't be compared with the 580exII. The nearest alternative flash I would say is the Metz, price is also around the same as 580exII.

icic. I am looking also at the Nissin SpeedLite Di622 instead of the 480 exII. As I a, pretty new, I am looking at using it for taking portraits and family group shots. Am I right to say both are equally compatible? I dont think i will be using for slave mode or strobist etc..

Strobes are fun and produce nice effects.

recommended.

- Nissin Di622
- YongNuo 460 II
- 2 Lightstand
- 2 Softbox Diffuser
- Micnova Flash Trigger System
- Additional Micnova Flash Receiver

Hey bro, we are using similar equipment setup. I've also been thinking of venturing into softboxes and wanted to get a 2 main flash w/softbox + slave for stills and portraits.

I would prefer to stick with one brand of flashes - probably Nissin. Which softbox brand/model and stands would be suitable to mount these speedlites? Any recommendations?

guys, have some question here.

is it alright to keep the battery in the battery rack for long period when not in use? will it cause the battery to drain off just by placing it in the rack?

Like all electronic devices, for prolong period it's advisable to take out the batteries.

I'm considering this flash, but due to the mixed responses from the web, I'm not certain if all the bugs (TTL, wireless TTL) have been ironed out.

Those of you who are owners of this flash, please advise if happy with your flash or not.

If money is not an issue... Pocket Wizard. :)

Since my first post, I have been using this Di866 for quite sometime and most of the time I'm using TTL. Consistency of the TTL exposure depends on lot of factors. Eg; the camera angle, metering modes, camera exposure, etc. There are so many things happening at the same time in the camera and even when you're taking the same shot, the exposures may be different(occasionally). I don't think it's the flash inconsistency issues. I believe most TTL flashes behave the same way.

My only issue is compatibility with 3rd party products. The TTL doesn't work on my YongNuo TTL cord anymore. (It used to be working fine). And I can't seem to find the correct size for its stofen diffuser. I'm using an oversized one.

Conclusion, this flash gives correct exposure most of the time. Overall I'm contented with it. Interface is easy to use. Powerful flash. Even at 1/8 - 1/4 power may sting your eyes (any burst of light will sting your eyes anyway). I've got no issue with the zooming 'noise' cause I'm not going to use this in the library. I'll rate this flash 3 out of 5 stars. Mind that the cost of this flash is half the price of 580EXII or SB900. So if you're not a heavy flash user and rather spend your money on lens, this one will do just fine. :)

Thanks for the reply bro.

So if you use TTL, maybe 90% of your shots are keepers?

About compatibility, I suppose one way of getting around that is to buy more Nissin flashes and go wireless, as Anson suggested. Actually if you are going into a >=2 flash setup, you would have the time to adjust the 2nd flash settings, so just use the 2nd flash as a manual one and go from there.

There are a number of 866 users in the Malaysian forum, some even using multiple units of 866. Check it out here:

Thts rite. Exposure wise (as long as you got your setting correct, 90% of the photos are usable). I'll check out the forum. Thks for the info!

I'm curious... Is Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash better then Nissin Di866?

Beside GN, optical slave & price I can't really find a reason to recommend Di866 over 580EXII on camera....

Hi Shahrie & other 866 users
Can you pls post a couple of pics using the 866? Preferably some direct, bounced, off camera flash shots (if possible). I would like to get a feel for the kind of light produced by the 866. Many thanks.

I went to re-read the reviews of the 866 and decided to jump in and ordered one, which should arrive in the next 2 days. :)

Curious you purchase it online (oversea) or locally?
