have to see the pics from the lens before saying lens is worth it or not....
can't judge a lens based on price alone.....

Not saying whether it's worth it or not, but compared to US price which is USD 440, the price here is crazy!
Someone at Nikon SG doesn't know how to do simple multiplication.

true..... but no choice, the market here is small, so i guess in order to raise the profit margin, they have to raise the price...
in US market, the market size is large and with that kind of quantity, small profit margin also can rake in very large revenue.....

as a consumer, i would also gladly welcome low prices for products, but it is beyond our control....
for lenses, due to international warranty, i guess its ok to get overseas...
but for camera bodies, getting local to take advantage of the warranty is what stop most buyers from ordering overseas.
Moreover, ordering from overseas also incur postage charges and we can't inspect the goods... so not much of an option for Sngapore buyers.

we are such a small country that we are so used to buying items by being physically at the shop...
Mail order is something that a lot of Sporeans dun really trust and like.... so customers are "exploited" by the organisation and would be on the losing end....

Totally agreed. many shops are "gang" together and often use the forum to influence the true lovers of photography like u. Milking our hard earn $$ in current down turn is typical of their hard sell tactics.

You can get it from Amazon at USD506 including shipping to Singapore which turns out to be SGD738.76. I think it is quite affordable.

if not mistaken, some bros and sis say that the lens price is also 700+....
would rather get in spore because can check the lens.... if savings is not too much, makes more sense to be able to check the lens before buying..

shops here selling from $750 to close to $800.....maybe just wait a week or two for the prices to "stabilise"....

yeah price is on the high side...was hoping it would be ard $650...

Crazy!

Btw anyone done a comparison test of the Sigma 50mm F/1.4 HSM with the Nikon AFS 50mm F/1.4? Can't find it online yet...

cut thru the BS and u have an honest to goodness review.

of course, not everyone agrees with KRW's sense of humour, some even take everything he says too seriously :bsmilie:

Wow, $800 is too exp... Was hoping for $700 or so, even then have to consider...

Now can just forget it... :bsmilie:

It's not too late to ask for a Christmas present!!!

Frankly speaking... The price of this lens (now as I'm typing) cost even more than the Canon 50mm f/1.4 prime lens. That's pretty ridiculous price indeed. If it doesn't fell below the S$500 mark. I don't even want to think of getting one then.:sticktong

maybe if demand is low, they might lower the price ?
but it seems that the prices of nikon lenses are pretty stable, hardly see much of a reduction one...

Hey people, browsing this thread for fun and also saw this lens for sale in Oz for about 629AUD. If you are visiting, you can use the gst refund scheme that they have; then it'll be only like around 570AUD-ish thereabouts. I bought my 70-300vr for about AUD660 this way :)

Me, I kena bbb virus lately so online window shopping madly :)

HTHs!

yup mscolor called me and said they have stock selling at $790. I told them I will wait.

maybe buy from Australia... dunno if I will go down during the chinese new year holidays....

I was at Cathay Photo to test out this lens on my D60. The built in motor to auto focus helps alot but the picture quality was dissapointing.

Using the same settings, I tried it together with the 50mm f/1.8D and 50mm f/1.4D, taking some shots of a white user manual. Somehow, the images from this lens came out yellowish compared with the 2 older lenses.

I was quoted $750 cash payment.

In the end, I opted for the 50mm f/1.8D. Although I have to manual focus on my D60, still no regrets.
