A modular system like the one from RED is completely different. DSLR video is bullshit compared to those. RED cameras have 3k resolution compared to 1080 on DSLR's, and they use the video-specific PL mount and other accessories Nikon has no experience with.. Nikon cannot compete in that market.

.....who is talking about **** video in the first place anyway, does modular need to include video?.....can't modular be just modular still with interchangeable parts etc.....not likely but feasible technically anyway.

In m4/3, only the sensor is smaller if you want to keep the lens. The difference between 4/3 and m4/3 is the redesign of the optics for a flange distance without the mirrorbox. So if you keep existing lenses, then you'll need that flange distance anyway which doesn't give a size advantage at all. Plus, the sensor size is reduced from DX, pixel density increased, noise increased. Just go compare the size of a D5000 with a GF1 or EP1. Other than the lens being shorter because of the lack of mirrorbox, the size is actually not much smaller.

Quite right there! I was just kidding a little. But thanks for the explanation! I did overlook a couple of points.

I'd love to have a modular system from Nikon as well..Dreaming of the day when people just upgrade their sensors and latest IO modules ;)

You implied video by saying - a modular system like the one from RED - so i assumed you were talking about video. But anyways that'd be a good idea.

DPReview says Nikon just announced 5 x Coolpixes....

If you notice, this guy in this post (#21) knew what he was talking about. ;)

So there are more excitement to come and I believed the real surprise in the later part.

Mentioned in the D700s thread...

No DSLR announced next week. Guessing it will be some coolpix cameras for PMA, a fast wide-angle prime (either 24/1.4 or 35/1.4) and a zoom. Plus a surprise - not sure what it is yet, but guessing it might be a large sensor compact with builtin zoom/fixed lens.

Announced later... my guesses are

D900 (18MP or greater) in march along with some more primes (either the 24/1.4 or 35/1.4 whichever isn't announced next week plus 85/1.4), mirrorless interchangeable lens camera system in june/july, D90 replacement in August, D700s (D3s sensor) in August.

This "gooseberry's" crystal ball is one where members here can glaze ..... ;)
