And by adopting a square sensor format, it could allow the user the option to shoot in any aspect format currently available with just one camera.

Really hope that this will come true.
Can't wait to get my hands on one of these cameras.

seems weird to me,if adopting a square format was possible, how will that be called 4/3 system?

4/3 lenses can still be used as they are with the new camera.
Currently, the image circle cast by the 4/3 lenses only fall on a 4/3 sized sensor which only occupy a part of the new square sensor.

4/3 does not refer the 4:3 aspect ratio by the way. If not, many P&S digicams would qualify to be called 4/3 cameras.:)

ok,now i'm confused,if that's the case, how is 4/3 4/3?I thought the sensors inside all current Oly DSLRs are 4 by 3?whereas PnS cameras have smaller sensors but only have a 4/3 aspect ratio

And what about the baffles that are on many FourThirds lenses, as well as lens hoods?

Don't confuse the 4/3 ratio with the FourThirds format, which by the way a 4/3 ratio is part of the standard! :bsmilie:

Olympus seems to be moving in the right direction now. They are coming out with more unique lenses eg 12-60mm SWD, 25mm pancake, 9-18mm, etc as well as low cost DSLR bodies with smaller form factor but packed full of features like the E-420 & E-520. According to some dpreview forumers with insider knowledge, the next DSLR Olympus would be coming would have the form factor of the E-4xx but with most of the features of the E-3.

yup that would really be attractive. Seriously if they can squeeze the IS, moving LCD screen into a small form factor, and maybe introduce a 12mm, 50mm pancake in addition to the 25mm pancake.... That will really be very attractive. By 2 bodies, mount 2 pancakes, you get very good portability and useability.

And no need for vertical grip...save cost further

hmm.. when money is no problem to me...
i will have:

Olympus for sports, all weather
Nikon for normal shooting, sports sunny weather
Canon to impress babes and feel pro
Pentax for best value under the sky
Sony for branding
Sigma for niche feel
Hasselbad for studio....

i dun think there will be on camera release that will persuade the entire population to use a particular format. i hope that when that day comes i'll still be around...

why not have all the companies be consolidated and use a universal DSLR mount in the first place? i think its a conspiracy to fool and rob the consumers of money... when we are presented with choices we are blur....

kopi used to be just kopi at the kopitiam...now we have cappucino, frappe, ice blended... but they are all still from coffee seed... some like it black some like it white.....

Isn't that what four thirds standard is about?a standard mount, lol, except sensors also have to change la for Canon,Nikon etc etc

This I have done... borrowed my friend's A700 cam and played with it... that's why with the price drop, Sony is dangling a sweet carrot in front of me:bsmilie:

Compare the colors & the dynamic range than u come and tell us again. ;)

I love this idea.

Hope Olympus will include this feature in the E3 replacement... I find the current 4:3 aspect ratio not very suitable for full body portraits...

Hi All,

I cannot understand this thread about FF sensor advantage. So what bigger sensor with bigger photo diode that can capture more light. Canon 5D FF sensor also ISO1600 only what. In the past IBM's server has cpu the size of a table...nowadays the same processing power is a size that is less than your thumb nail. Size is not all that matters, semiconductor technology has been moving so fast and new material is used to make better chip every yr. Oly will be able to keep the same sensor size and use a better sensor material in future.

I have the Fuji F11, Z2 and F31... ISO 3200 is good enough for candid shot and 4R print... the latest F100 can do ISO10000 even with a tiny PnS sensor. So if ones wants to go for high ISO... i think currently no other brand (or at least among those common brand) can compete with Fuji camera now for clean high ISO image. Fuji just keeps improving their Super CCD sensor technology, from F31 to F50 to F100, the sensor actually reduce size and increase pixel also.

My 2 cents opinion, as long as you dun buy Canon and Nikon, you are always wrong in those people eyes. Olympus and Fuji DSLR are just the 2 very special camera company which dare to be different and adopt future technology.

Just like car... dun buy Honda and Toyota means you are not normal liao... :o)

Well Said!!you're my kind of man :bsmilie:

I second that, I've shot medium format and i love the square format.... I'd definitely get my grubby paws on one.:heart:

Hehe, this is one FourThirds/Oly forum populated by level-headed folks; I appreciate the restraint showed so far.

I'll remove this thread on Monday, 7 Jul at 1200 UTC, till then have your say and stay your peace.
Today is the 10th of July and the thread is still not removed. Why? I did not read every word of it, but this thread has absolutely no value. the thread starter says absolutely nothing in his opening post, it is just an "I jump ship" post which nowadays gets reported and deleted even on DPR.

I all honesty, I think the TS is NEVER going to jump ship, just dreams about the camera.

Next take into consideration the lenses avaliable and $$$ and the type of photography u will be going into.. :)

while the TS's jump ship post does not contribute to the forum, some of the points raised by the other members, especially on the considerations before changing systems are definitely useful.

true, but for the cpu, u are comparing technology many years ago with current tech. so for the same technology, bigger photo diode would mean better noise control, but of cos in a few years those extra performance will be overtaken by use of better technology.

Well, to get the higher sensitivity, they use those extra pixels to clean up the image, similar to how Olympus is using an 11.8 gross MP sensor to achieve 10.1 MP that look good.

You're not getting the maximum resolution and maximum ISO sensitivity at the same time.

I rescinded deleting the thread due to requests from the community to keep it as a topic for discussion - while the intention of the thread has little value, but the subsequent materiel contribution by the community has been informative - as headfonz has already pointed out. The whole point of forums, after all, is open discussion.

Of course as the active moderator here I still do reserve the right to steer the community back on track if it drifts too far, or wholesale deletion if it decays into a slanging match.
