i meant the IQ of the photos. as i've got a friend using d300. he's using prime lens only for the shots. its able to capture higher IQ as comapred ot mine. in terms of sharpness and details.

Maybe you can post some samples on what you are not happy with in your shots?

Help me decide...

I currently have 18-55mm kit lens and planning to get a new Zoom Lens. Should I take 55-200 in addition to my kit lens or totally replace 18-55 and get 18-200mm lens which will cover everything.

My deciding factor is quality over budget. How's 18-200 quality vs 55-200?

About the same.

In fact, if you are more focused on quality, you should get the 55-200 VR. A do-it-all lens usually comes with compromises on distortion.

If you are considering the 18-200, it should be for convenience of not needing to change lenses.

55-200mm has apperture of f/4-5.6 and 18-200mm has f/3.5-5.6, does larger aperture have any effect in terms of quality?

For the 18-200mm, at 18mm the max aperture is F3.5. At 55mm the maximum aperture is probably F4 too.

Your 18-55 kit lens is also max aperture F3.5 at 18mm.

So you think there is a difference?

nope, aperture does not dictate IQ, rather, its the glass inside. Typically, longer zooms have lower IQ than shorter zooms. thats y ppl prefer primes for their IQ, and also their large aperture as a benifit.

I brought my D5k with kit 18-55mm, and also got the sigma 18-200mm with OS and HSM.

I am those lazy guy who dun like to change lens when travelling. so far I am happy with the 18-200. IQ for the 18-200, nothing to shout abt, but acceptable by myself. I am not those pixel peeper.

if you wanna quality, than its better to go for prime lens. most super zoom lens will not give u the quality. the link is some test pic I took with sigma, u can check if u find the IQ ok with u ...http://jmwindows.multiply.com/photos/album/181#

yupz agree with u...:)

merry x'mas to all~~

Merry Christmas to all.
I have 2 questions & I need some help.
1) When I set my D5000 to auto mode, I find that I can’t set it to force flash where else my pns compact camera can. In other words, I can’t choose to fire the flash in auto mode even if I want to. It’s all up to the camera to decide. Is there some setting that I have missed out?
2) When viewing photos using Nikon ViewNX, I can’t turn ON the slide show even i have selected all the JPG files. It always showed an error “File could not be found”. Again is there some setting that I have missed out?
Thanks!

You should start to explore using the P mode. Whenever you pop up the flash, it means you are forcing the flash to "on"

Hi guys need to ask a noob question. As i've being facing lousy IQ problem since the day i bought the camera using my 18-55 VR kit lens.

1) When i put autofocus on auto changing between still/moving subject and metering on 3D. i would still be able to select the focus point which is we could view thru our viewfinder. But if there's two person in the photo we could only place one person in the viewfinder and not both. THen when i snap it came out that one person was clear while the other was off focus. But sometimes it turns out both are clear. Could anyone suggest or recommend me a better way or style in which i could resovle this?

2) When i take photos of scenery the photo when not zoomed into 100% looks good. but when i put it at 100% in view NX. The photo came out pretty much noisy and pixelated even when i'm in Shutter priority/Aperture piority. I'm not sure what's the problem.

As my gf has being saying i can't see the difference between ur camera and a point and shoot! and i'm oging bogus over it wanna improve on it to prove nikon rocks.

Thanks in advance.

1) shoot with a smaller aperture (bigger f/ number)
2) Check your ISO settings. should shoot in ISO 100 or 200 depending on the amount of daylight.

edit: corrected

lets be very frank....IQ from today P&S is really good and your gf is not wrong to say that....

differences between DSLR and P&S is the ability to change lens(wide angle, super zoom ,macro...etc) if you are sticking with the kit lens ...expect more such comments....get some "good" lens, and thats where it show a differences....
and also..photography is not about IQ only...shoot a good pic and nobody will care abt the IQ....even if its slightly oof....its still a good pic

1. use bigger aperture (higher f/number)
2. maybe you can show some pic as example....

Smaller aperture you mean, higher "f-number" means smaller hole in the lens, since it is a ratio calculated by 1 / Fnum.

1) shoot with a bigger aperture
2) Check your ISO settings. should shoot in ISO 100 or 200 depending on the amount of daylight.

Do you mean smaller aperture? If you want to extend the Depth of Field (get more things at different distances to be in focus), you want a smaller aperture.

To prove to her you can shoot, you need to spend some time reading and learning:

Basics of exposure and Depth of Field - http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=309544

Hey below attached are some of the photos that i've taken but i've processed them to be smaller without the camera details. but do let me know where i need to work on it.. wanna produce better results using the nikon. Admin said can't post photos here so here are the links. :)

cheers
