Hi All,

I have 2 kit lens (18-55 and 55-200). I want to get a Portrait Lens and my idea was initially looking at Tamron 90mm f/2.8 or Nikkor 105mm f/2.8. But my friends advise me to get Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.4 instead. What is your opinion? Thank you.

hi there, those 2 you mentioned are designed for macro, it will just double as portrait..the price difference is also almost double for the nikkor, if you're willing to spend as much 1000 sgd and is contented with just a f2.8 aperture, you might want to look at sigma 50-150 f2.8 HSM II, same aperture with those two but you've got more versatility with the variable zoom albeit no macro capability (minimum focusing distance is 39 inches), lens is good based on my experience, I can't comment on the performance of the other lens as have not tried other power zooms, but here's some of my sample pix:

i find it sharp enough for my taste, and also satisfied with the bokeh

Hmm.. that kinda sucks

I mean, CS3 wasn't too long ago. But anyway I'm using LR before CS so not so applicable to me. But still, it sucks.

Yes it sure does. I was forced to buy CS4 because of that. I ugraded from CS to CS3 hence cannot upgrade anymore - so have to buy new (have to fork out $1100+) :thumbsd: not that I need the CS 4 features. Kinda of sad

i would suggest the 50mm...for portrait..because 105mm is a bit close when come to shooting portraits...

When come to setting for taking Portraits, in the AF-area mode, do you select Single Point, Dynamic Area, Auto Area or 3D-tracking?

For metering, do u select Matrix, Center Weighted or Spot?

single point, matrix most of the time for me..if im using a larger aperture lens i always make sure the eyes are on focus, if camera is vertical, i switch focus point to the top most, for full/half body shots, it will point to the subjects face..switching focus points is better than compose recompose technique if DOF is thin

Hello all,

I just bought a D5K recently and started shooting with it over the CNY period.

Problem is: I can't seem to open up the RAW (.NEF) files on my Photoshop CS2.

I have a D40 and shooting and opening up the files in PS CS2 was not a problem previously.

Does anyone have the same encounter?

I am using Picasa3 to convert NEF to JPG and also play some tweaking to the photo. Picasa3 is a freeware and can do some basic PS.

I think you've got the logic backwards....

FWIW, 75mm (50mm on DX) is still too close for 'portraits', unless you're not referring to head & shoulder shots.
And more so in the studio because of the lighting.

Thanks alot for all your tips.
Actually I just need a software that can open up the NEF in different EV settings so I can play with HDR afterwards.

Will try to explore the Picasa.

I tried the Picasa and it's great! both as a photo viewer and of course it opens up and can edit the .NEF file which the PS CS2 cannot.

However, anyone has any ideas how to adjust the EV setting ie +2 EV or -2 EV?

thanks in advance.

you have to use photoshop cs4 for d5000 raw, adobe doesnt update their raw support for older versions of photoshop and since d5000 was released after cs4, adobe updated only cs4..

anybody here have paired their d5000 body with Tamron 17-50 f2.8 VC?

I need your opinion.
I am thinking of using this to shoot baby pictures under low light situation.
I figure that I need a large aperture and vibration reduction/compensation.
Unfortunately, Nikon doesn't have a mid-range zoom with f2.8 and VR.
Even if they do, I guess the price will be exorbitant :)

u can try 17-55mm f/2.8..of course...the price is really exorbitant..abt $2k++ for a new one...:P

u shd not adjust your EV to highest......shd be lower - the cam LCD look bright...but the actual pic is darker...( I make this mistake before also)
secondary u can try auto mode? ....if its still over expose...than I think either your house computer LCD is too bright...or your cam up the lorry liao......

bro...just a qns that puzzel me for quite a while ...17-55..compare to kit 18-55.....just 1mm diff in the lower end...but the price is more than 10times different...whats the catch to get that extra 1mm wider? but pay 10times more? ....

Well i bet the extra money goes to the build of the 17-55mm lens. In 17-55mm, there's alot more optics as compared to the normal kit lens (17-55mm has fourteen elements in ten groups, 3 aspherical lens elements n 3 ED glasses, while 18-55mm has 7 elements in 5 groups, one of which is an aspheric and one of ED glass.) [taken from kenrockwell.com]. And not forgetting the 17-55mm has a more solid body as compared to the kit lens, plus features like IF and the positioning of the zoom and focus rings. and thus the high price tag of the 17-55mm lens

It's not just the 1mm difference. It's more the constant f2.8 and built quality.
I had one and sold it cuz I found it very front heavy with D5000.

I wanted a midrange zoom VR lens with f2.8.
I think the only option right now is the Tamron 17-50mm VC.
Anybody has tried this combo?
