Nikon D2Hs vs D300

So I guess it's a good approximation of the noise of D2Hs then..

Yes. I only look at the 1 diagram instead of the RGB 3 section diagram. Hope this helps.

OK.. Here is a similar test I did quickly a while ago on D300. I set the on-camera flash to manual mode and controlled the aperture such that my white floor which I deliberately out of focus is rendered grey in the image. Maintaining roughly the same height, I shot at ISO Lo1(100), 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200 and Hi1(6400) while only stopping down the aperture. High ISO NR setting is at Low. Resolution is JPEG Fine at 12mp.

Here is the result (100% crop) I compiled.

They seem to be quite similar to that of D2X.

The D2hs noise control seems quite comparable to D300 up to ISO 1600.

Sorry, I mean up to iso 3200. But in actual fact, the noise control of D300 at ISO 3200 is about half a stop better than D2hs at ISO 3200.

But don't forget D2Hs is 4mp. The D300 crops are from 12mp images. That's already an advantage. ;p

Seems like LB-CAST isn't a very mature technology. 4mp and the noise at 100% crop is at best only similar with D2X's and D300's 12mp CMOS at 100% crop.

I heard about this 0.5 stop better can teach me how to measure? :dunno:

You mean the noise of D2x is better than that?

You can compare the D300 noise I posted with the dpreview review of D2X. It's quite similar with D2X rendering very slightly cleaner images for ISO800 and below.

LBCAST although unique in its design... was derived from CMOS.

It is CMOS, not a derivation of it. Only the CMOS we are used to uses MOSFETs, while the JFET LBCAST uses.. well, JFETs.

I was planning to get a D300 for "low noise", seems like I can't find an excuse to buy one anymore. (D80, D2x)

Can anyone care to help me find some excuses? (I have a fetish for lenses, not the bodies)

Live Preview (I don't use that, so who cares)
12 mp (I also don't care much about this, anyway D2x can do this)
3.0 inch screen
AF Module :thumbsd: ? ? (Which one is significantly better? Supposedly D300 and D3 are better, but I can't see any difference)
6/9 FPS (I won't bother with a new cam just because of 1 FPS more or one FPS less)

Pleae help me find some "excuses" ;p

What body are you using now?

To give some more excuses, assuming you're using D2x now:

1) Built-in pop-up flash
2) Lighter body
3) With VG, can use AA batteries! (apart from the 3e and 4/4a)

Let's say D80 99% of the time. But D2x is still around anyway (left behind in USA, haven't got around to get her airflown back!) ;p

lighter body, pop up flash not that important since if really need I can get D2x back. AA batteries?

You like it, buy it.

Still need more "excuses", then keep using your D80 or D2x since you think D300 can't compare with that.

Oh, not sure if D80 can use AA batteries with the VG or not. So no more excuses already.

OT: Huggable don't mind paying the airfare to fly the D2x if he can keep the camera! ;p

I got my D300 yesterday and if there is 1 reason you should get it for is the huge screen. It is a great camera overall with many many little improvements here and there that make a difference.

D80 can use AA batteries, but unless I have run out of Lithium batt I don't think I will every touch AA batteries. And it is real hard to run out of batteries on either D2x or D80. I think the current batch starting from D2H has never been "battery bad" anyway. D1 and D100 are also fine, just that I don't like Ni-MH. Heard D200 was bad, but how bad it is I don't know since I have never played intensely with it.

Pay airfare to keep my camera? ;p
I think a 2nd hand camera in better condition in B & S is a better idea... later you take two shots on the D2x and shutter break on you...... :bsmilie:

51pts 3D AF tracking which follows your subject!
