but also if i need more reach den i need to get a TC.. so still kinda torn in between... maybe shld just get a 70-300 for the time being..
The AF-D lenses, you can use a Kenko TC. which I sold a 2x for $100.
But what do you gain? you gain a F2.8 capability, which makes the 80-200 an excellent portrait lens and events. If you use a x1.7 TC, your focal length becomes 340mm max aperture is still at F4.5. Whereas, on the 70-300, at 300mm you are already at F5.6. Even if you use the x2 TC on the 80-200 giving your 400mm, your max aperture still matches the 70-300mm max aperture at 300mm.
you gain so much more in terms of uses, as well as options.
