Nikon 70-300 or?

haha.. let say if looking at 70-300.. are sigma/tamron ones any good?

Reviews are more in favor of Nikon version. Tamron uses micro motor I think. It is slow and noisy. Sigma has wide spread qc issues related to its brand. IMHO if got choice, go for Nikon la :D

if can of cox i will go for nikon.. lols..

used my fren's tamron 18-270 before.. feel quite ok though.. but must see the price.. if difference not big den get nikon better..

Ah yes I remember now. Both are said to be on par in terms of optics, price and build quality. . However the tamron vc is always on giving u a rock solid image all the time and this may fight against you if you're panning. The Nikon vr kicks in only during half press of the shutter button. Some say tamron optics are better but I don't think it will matter at our level :P

In that case then the tamron is not a bad option too. Tamron is known for excellent optics but less thn average build quality

i have used a canon mount before. built quality is very good, doesn't feel like it is going to fall apart, the weight of the lens gives added assurance. zoom ring is tight as usual.

the VC is very very good, it works like magic.

They cost about the same. It's just that function of the vr that I mentioned above. Is about 50 dollars of difference worth that tiny trade off? Or is it even a trade of at all?

If you are looking for the version with VR, the Tamron is not that much cheaper than the Nikon iirc.

cox right now my 55-200 whenever i wan to get closer and tighter.. i cant get it.. and maybe take some photos of birds..

For me, i'll try to avoid 3rd party lens as i dont know how to check for focusing problem. For birdg, i think 70-300mm vr is good. Very good reach. I even use it for concert (low lighting), but must sit within first 10 rows for better lights :)

icic.. hmmm.. still in the process of thinking.. haha..

You know you can always buy 2nd hand, much cheaper.

haha.. i was looking at the push pull version too.. but donno leh.. the lens is very very old le wor..

Old, but still a very very good lens optically. If deciding between Tamron 70-200 or Nikon 80-200/2.8D push pull, it is a no brainer.. go for the push pull. The problem is, there is no tripod mount on the push pull. So if you need to use this lens on a tripod, best to get a long lens support.

You can see some sample pics here:
Confessions of a Sensory Addict: The Little Cannon

And the 80-200/2.8D push pull is very value for money nowadays. I sold mine, which is near mint, for around $750 including original hood (Hood do not come with this lens standard).

i know its af-d.. what i mean is that when focusing on like d7000 all these.. i donno if it would still be accurate or not.. since its already so old..

Don't look down on AF-D, other then noisy during focusing. U still can count on it for accurate focusing.
Unless your subject is very fast, u may need AF-S lens to lock down the subject.

Furthermore the price you are paying for 2nd hand 80-200 AF-D one touch(cheapest) followed by two-touch is much lesser then 2nd hand 70-200VR1.
If you are still not satisfied, get the 3rd party option 70-200 lens and upgrade to nikon one in future when u have enough spare $$.

Actually, on certain camera bodies, Some AF-D lenses are faster than their AF-S counterparts.
