Dennis is this lense available now in SING?

Pardon the double posting of my question. Failed to refresh my page. thanks for the info. Good day!

Thanks for sharing. These test photos look better than those from other sites.

Other than the sharpness, how's it's performance in controlling distortion, vignette / fallout?

Thanks again.

The shots looks a tad soft to me but I guess still acceptable. Anyone want to volunteer to test this side by side with the 18-200 over the 18-85mm range? ;p

would be good if someone would do a review of tis 2 lens. i am considering getting the 16-85 if its sharper than my 18-200.

Maybe the 18-85 should be tested against the 18-70mm (D70 kit) rather than the 18-200?

Then it will be just 18-70 because it cannot go to 85mm. ;p The reason for comparing with the 18-200 is for those who are deciding whether they want a wider coverage (16mm) or a longer reach (200mm).

well, make it a 3-corner fight then - Battle of the 'Kit Lenses'. ;)

But really, I think what the TS has done is already very helpful.

It does look like the 16-85 is going to be the new nikon Kit lense King.

thanks for the pics :thumbsup::thumbsup:

i guess sharpness isnt that fantastic, but decent, for a zoom lens. distortions arent very obvious, and CAs like tt are normal (such big contrast)

i wonder how the lens will fare as compared to the canon 17-85 IS cos it was rated pretty badly by some reviews ive seen, esp this 1: http://www.photozone.de/Reviews/Can...ef-s-17-85mm-f4-56-usm-is-test-report--review

price difference?

Hi there. Just got my 16-85VR a coupla hours ago. Haven't tested it yet but judging from the 60-70 shots I've taken so far everything looks quite good  (on a D300). I'll be testing it up against the 18-70 soon. I know it's not a fair comparison (huge price diff), but all the same it would be interesting for me. I don't have the 18-200VR so cannot do the comparison. BTW, focussing is spot-on, unlike my 18-70, which had to be tweaked (AF fine-tune):)

Why is it a battle of kit lenses? As I understand, 16-85 is not currently a kit lens right? Certainly not for the D60, which was what a lot of people were speculating some weeks ago.

How much is it going for now?

Thanks Dennis for the effort, looks good to me.

Mmm what do you all want to see in a test for the 3 lens i.e. 16-85, 18-70 and 18-200. Would have added the 17-55 as well if not for the fact that it now belongs to somebody else.

So far, this is what I've found. The 16-85VR betters the 18-70 at the shorter FL(18mm), especially at the shorter distances (less than about 4m). The contrast too, is better with more 'bite' and clarity.. At longer distances (infinity) the difference are'nt that great and I would call it a tie. I need to get out and test more (at infinity).
At 70mm f/5.6 the 18-70 looks to be a tad better, but the difference is small. It could be that the VR lens is wide open at f/5.6 whereas the 18-70 is stopped down a little at that aperture.

OK then, so far, this is what I've found. The 16-85VR betters the 18-70 at the shorter FL(18mm), especially at the shorter distances (less than about 4m) and the corners are definitely better.

At 70mm f/5.6 the 18-70 looks to be a tad better, but the difference is small. It's probably that the VR lens is wide open at f/5.6 whereas the 18-70 is stopped down a little at that aperture. BTW, using the identical settings on the D300, the pics from the 18-70 are about a third of a stop brighter. Colour-wise, the VR lens is a little more saturated, by about a few percent.
I must add that I bought the 16-85 mainly for the VR feature. I was quite surprised by the price  but the ability to shoot at the slower shutter speeds without flash is a difinite plus point for me - I have taken shots (24mm) indoors at 1/5 sec. that are tack-sharp. I could never do that without the VR. If I was going to shoot indoors especially at the wide end without flash then the VR lens is better by quite a fair bit.
So is the 16-85VR for you? Gee, that's a tough call. The 18-70 is a pretty decent lens for the price, but as usual if you want a little better you gotta shell out those big bucks:o Why must life be so complicated??

So RobbieJ may I know how much you pay for it?

i jus got this len over the weekend, not in spore, but in JB.
the price was good,
for rm2080,i got the len and a hoya uv filter.

The price difference is even greater with the 18-200 but people still compares them. ;p

So now there are a few lenses which is worth comparing side by side. 16-85VR, 18-55, 18-55VR, 18-70, 18-135, 18-200VR.
