Night shots with W1 or W5

The specification said the aperture is f2.8 and f5.6 without any zoom in. You probably zoom in to get f8, is it? There is a difference right? sorry, i'm a newbee, I dunno whether there is a difference abt this.:dunno:

Exposing lights at night with manual aperture n shutter speed settings to achieve the 'star' effect is always more beautiful. Here's a sample using cross filter cos my P8 do not have any manual aperture n shutter settings.

Even though my W5 has manual mode that allows apertures of up to f10 (when zoomed in), I cannot get the desired starburst effect. It is quite sad that I would have to spend money and get addons when the other PnS cameras can do that without all these hassle. :(

So basically, to achieve the effect, I would need:

1.

VAD-WA: S$50.00

2.

VF-30SC: S$75

For me after buying my P8 early last year, i subsequently bought its full accessories including the lens n filter adapter, slave flash, circular polarizer filter, ND filter n special effects filters, wide conversion lens (0.7X), tele conversion lens (2.6X), spare batt, extra 256MB MS n cleaning kit. Totalling around $1800+

Thats not a lot. You can get those for less at CP. :) Send them a email for an equote. VAD-WA only $40 the last time i asked. For most other P&S cameras, you wanna add also cannot ah!

Wow! You bought so many accessories? I only bought a adaptor, Pol filter, wide and teleconversion. :p The wideconverter is very useful to me.

Other than this star-problem, W5 thrashes A95 in virtually all aspects. The BIG LCD is a huge plus. Take a look at the A95 and you'll suddenly feel claustrophobic. You should read the reviews available on the Net.

But W5 has got a defect: It uses memory sticks!
:bsmilie:
A95 has (alot)smaller screen, but the screen is of higher resolution than the W5. 118k pixels vs 115k pixels.
A95 has got more photographer orientated modes (like Av and Tv) while W5 is rather basic/limited.

For the W5, there's extremely limited manual control. u can only select 2 different apertures values. At wide-angle that's F2.8 or F5.6 and at telephoto it's F5.2 or F10. In between wide and telephoto you'll have different values. A95 allows you to access a wide inbetween range.

But all in all i can't stand the A95. Too bulky and big.

I guess that's one of the things that's limiting you from getting your star effect.
The W5 doesn't actually control the aperture size, most probably just fixed. What happens is that when the lens zooms out, the same hole size as compared, is smaller and equivilant to other aperture size.
For example, actual size of the aperture F5.6 @ wide angle = actual size of F10@ tele.
Only difference is that there's a loss of light, so that the amount of light going through the aperture is equivilant to F10. Sort of like cheating.

Thus with a bigger hole, it would be impossible to get your star effect.

Yupz, now the wide conversion is permanently on my P8, unless i want to shoot long distant objects then i change to the tele-conversion. Cos i was starting out serious photography that's y i bought the entire accessories for my P8, original sony one sure very ex.

But for event shoots, i use my 35mm SLR :)

Wah... spending $1800+ on a compact cam is really alot leh!!! Think the same amt can probably get u a decent prosumer with megazoom, image stabliser + some 3rd party WA/TC/filters...

Think other than my W1 (& the provided 128x2mb MS + 4x2100mAh rechargable batts) r Sony orginals, the rest of my accessories (filter adapter, WA converter (0.42x), UV, Cir.P, Star-6, ND4, Closeup +4, 512mb MS Pro) are all 3rd party stuff... Total setup cost me abt $997, which I think is quite a sum spent for a compact cam leow...

I luv the fish-eye effect on my WA... It's pretty fun to take those "big-face-small-body" shots with it, & its macro combo gives me rather cool-looking shots with super shallow DOF!! Haha... But for landscape-wise quality not tt gd lor... My ND4 let me take long shutters of 25-30s w/o overexposure, making the bumpy river look like a flat mirror surface at nite, very nice!

Now with that amount i spent can get me 1 DSLR + another lens. For my model they don't have any close-up filter cos it's using a 30mm filter diameter. My accessories alone without the cam already cost me around $1300.

I've never tried using my ND8 to take long exposures cos my P8's max shutter speed is only 2sec.
