NEX 5N given the Gold award by Dpreview

It seems you can't take dpreview's test shots too seriously anyway coz they seem to be unable to focus properly from time to time and they seem to change the lighting from review to review as well.

If dpreview studio shots are not the best way, i cant think of any other fair way to compare shots of different cameras.

As you said, in real world shooting, lighting condition changes every now and then, even if its only 1 minute apart, you may get different exposure readings, so comparing them at these situations are even more tricky.

I know in studio shots, best is to compare raw which you could at dpreview.

However at this pricepoint, most people who use them normally shoots at Jpegs, so the way the camera processes them plays a part in deciding image quality.

Think you don't get what I mean, even from the shots I see in the comparison table from DPreview have obvious differing approaches to balancing noise and detail. If say, camera A has a lot of detail but is also noisier compared to camera B, if you can reduce the noise further with say, Noise Ninja and the detail retained from the output is still better than camera B, then that would be a surefire way of telling which camera balances out the noise/detail better. :)

Naturally can use the studio shots to run such tests, forgot about that. Also, these things can be very subjective... I've seen a few comparisons where DPreview says that one camera clearly outperforms the other, but the text doesn't match what I see with my eyes. :(

Since we cant do it ourselves, there isnt any other choice isnt it?

Unless we buy all cameras and test them side by side?

Got people say here don't need ISO6400? Where???
I definitely need high shutter speeds and a better high ISO performance is always welcome!

Sure, I just wish they would do a better job but it's better than nothing.

just shoot and improve. no point arguing over which brand is better. your shots prove your skill, not which camera you use.

Its always funny that when any other non-sony cameras get good rating, many will try to use that to boast around and then bash sony for lousy image quality.

Now that sony has became frontrunners of image quality, people suddenly say they dun need iso6400.

Sour grapes.

Understand your frustrations Bro, ...some 'pple just keep shifting the goalposts !

This is no a scientific test but to show that ISO6400 is very usable

Same thoughts here. Have been looking to move on from a P&S to APS-C sensor camera.

Was undecided between a77/ nex7 and nex-5N. Now it seems, I am leaning towards the nex-5N.

Yeah same here argh see how it goes :-)

the 5N is a great camera, but is it a worthwhile upgrade over the 5?
