NEX 5N given the Gold award by Dpreview

I lean and lean and lean until I fell flat on one during lunch earlier at HN, Northpoint ! :bsmilie:
You lucky b-----d!

I decided to go for the 5N instead of the a77. (So no, I'm not from the canikon camp.)

I got to wait till next Sat as I am not in SG now. Have loads of fun with your new gadget!

Didn't know was your turf, Bro ! ...anyway, after lunch, walk in and slam, bang ...everything was over in 5 minutes (including shaking the camera vigorously for 2 minutes :bsmilie:)

You've gotten 5n? I thought you getting A77?

Thanks, I certainly will ! (Once I knock off work, go home charge battery and wait till the Wife's asleep !!!) ;p
...Don't care which camp you're from because I'm in the "Just Shuddup and shoot whatever camera" camp. ;)
Like you, I've also decided to go for the 5N instead of the A77 but unlike you, this is certainly not my first DSLR/SLT/EVIL.

Good decision ! ...I support you, GO FOR IT !

crap seeing all these high ISO photos also makes me re think my A77/NEX7 purchase lolz...I might end up with NEX 5n or A580 lolz

I think its easy choice, at least for me.

A77 when i need fast AF speed, weather sealed and fast bursting shots. Eg, zoo, events or some outdoor outings.

Nex5n when i was to be discrete, travel light and shoot good low light photos.

point to note is that from all the review samples i have seen, its true 5N has better low light performance, from iso3200 onwards, its probably 0.5-1 stop better than A77. However, with more A-mount lens choice and the new f2.8 kit lens, A77 can anytime shoot at least 0.5stop at wide angle and 2stops faster at tele-end using both kit lens, so in a way negate the advantage that nex5n has, unless you hoot the cz24 lens when its out but its not cheap.

When outdoor or anything iso1600 and below, theres no difference in IQ for both A77 and 5N, but A77 has more native A-mount lens for better IQ.

The RAW samples from dpreview seems that 5n has at least 1.5 stop advantage over the a77. the a77 looks only slightly better than the EPL3 at high iso

There goes to show sony has vastly improved their jpeg processing.

And its not becos A77 is lousy, its just that 5N is damn bloody good. A77 definitely matches all other apsc cameras up till iso3200 which is more than enough for me. Even the acclaimed D7000 (which i also have) and K5 looks noisy to me beyond that.

Most importantly, A77 has improved over A700, A33/55 and matches or exceed competition at same price point.

Its silly to compare it against FF or even 5N which has different target market and performance.

Looking at A77 as a camera as a whole, its worth the price and upgrade. Also it has far more native lenses to use than 5N and EPL3.

the 5N is a great camera, but is it a worthwhile upgrade over the 5?

All together now, "ah bah den?" :)

heck..for me i only had a Nex5. small and light. if i want better IQ.. get the Sony adapter and CZ mount it on Nex. Done.
lol.. somewhat i got a feeling the E mont CZ24 will be selling like hotcake.

Are you looking at RAW or Jpeg? I took a closer look at RAW and A77 starts to have noise as low as ISO400. To compare a 24mp aps-c against a micro 4/3 is not a good thing. Why settle for anything less? Since you already have a D7000 and 5n, i dont see any reason to upgrade (is it even an upgrade or downgrade when it comes to IQ)?

I have a D700 and now with 5n, I wouldnt settle for anything lesser when it comes to IQ, if not I would have went with the EP3 for its size, fast AF and lenses line up but I still think 5n compliments the D700 with the ability to use nikon lenses by MFing until E mount has something better to offer.

Not going to convince you to drop the idea but hope you actually look closer and not fall into "getting the latest technology crap".

anyway, try here
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonynex5n/page14.asp

pick RAW, 5n, d7k, epl3 and a77 and do the comparison yourselves.. pick a few spots for comparison and it should be very obvious starting from ISO400 onwards

Not sure if you have tried A77 on your hands before.

I tried bro Rashkae copy for a brief period and was immersely impressed by how the camera operates and easy to use. The superb EVF and shutter lag alone makes one wants to buy it immediately.

I shoot jpeg most of time and if its raw, i am sure the noise can be removed even easier.

I have owned and tried most cameras in the market, from most brands as well and i still feel very much attached to sony due to its user interface and features.

My thinking is that, yes i can always buy the most expensive camera in the market that gives me the best IQ, but if i dun feel like using it often or i find them difficult to operate, its useless to buy them and hve them sleeping in dry cab most of the time.

I agree with you its useless to chase after the newest gadgets and its the final image quality that is most important.

But sometimes or rather i say many of times, its always the heat up anticipation in us that decides the purchase. :p

Dear photo taking friends,
Can I ask you if you find the Nex5N too noisy to use for church shooting? You know how such shooting needs to be a discrete as possible? I am faced with having to do just this and am wondering if I need to choose a DSLR over this camera which I know I will find a better choice when I travel. I just wonder if it can also fulfill a need to shoot in a really quiet place as well. Thanks.
