Newbies Outing (Part 13) - 21 July Marina Bayfront Area Photos

Finally just managed to get to check in.

[*]Too bad I didn't shoot enough, particularly night shoots as had to volunteer my tripod for a member who was tripod-less, fearing the security-type people not letting tripods through. Nonetheless, no excuse for myself not to shoot any. Most were handheld and as such, all had shakes. Nvm, will go up and shoot again :)

Uh oh...I'm the member without tripod
I think I was just being too obedient
Thanks again for the tripod :D

These images taken from the top that I have seen so far has a better balance than most. However, do watch the rule of thirds.

Could you elaborate a little bit more about the 'balance', I'm not sure I understand what is that mean?
Thanks

It's all right. What's important is that the participants enjoy. Most times, as organizers, hardly have time to shoot for myself. Will go up again probably on my own sometime down the road.

Hope you have keepers in your collection from last Wednesday :)

Cheers!

Hi Jeff,

Picture size is too small. If in landscape orientation, try keeping the picture size to 800 to 1,000 pixels.

Generally, looks ok to me, but had to strain my eyes to see it.

HTH!. Cheers!

Hi Hang83, sorry I missed you. Thanks for posting your pictures :)

Most of the buildings in the left are cut off. If you can, try to adjust so that it does not get cropped off from the frame. Moving to a different angle does help too.

Another, try to lower your lens, and not point it upwards. If possible, make it parallel to the ground/water so you'd avoid perspective distortion, else your buildings look like they are leaning inwards.

HTH.

Cheers!

confused by this photo.
Based on the EXIF, it states that you used f/16 and 10s exposure.
How did you manage to 'freeze' a moving boat (there's a wake behind the boat) with a 10s exposure? hehehe magic?

concur with dingaroo about the lens tilting up and causing all sorts of unwanted distortion. You can see the buildings "leaning" towards the centre of the frame.

ahhh... ok..
I was confused because of the "wake" behind the boat, giving the impression that it's moving quite rapidly.
I wonder what that is...

my noob homework.

was struggling with my tripod for vertical shots. s.t.r.u.g.g.l.e.d. badly. anyway gave up and use hand-held. next time will ask a senior how to not let the whole camera body drag the ballhead down (towards the ground) when placed vertically.

You can either:
1) Get a stronger ballhead which can lock firmly and hold your setup. If your heaviest setup is 2kg (for example), a 4kg-rated ballhead is a safe bet. The higher the stronger, depending on how kiasu you are! :)

2) Get an L-plate that screws onto the base of your camera and provides another ballhead mount in the portrait orientation. This keeps your camera setup DIRECTLY ABOVE the ballhead when in portrait orientation, thus reducing strain on the ballhead.

and by the way, you should reduce the size of your image for posting online... too big. Gotta scroll here scroll there. Recommended size is no bigger than 900 x 600 pixels

That's right! L-plate is the way to go! BBB

Here is my L-plate, if you want to know what it looks like.

I believe that would be the barge they use to launch the fireworks for NDP.

Gathering the numbers for our localized "mass order". Not so soon la.

Want cheap and good, must wait...

apologies for replying late.

Just imagine a see-saw.... if you put something on the left side, it will tilt left and to balance it, you need something of similar "weight" to balance it. Such "balance" does not always apply and depending how you want the photo to "feel"....

Generally, your photos looks more balance. You chose to include Raffles city and whole of esplanade in your photo which nicely balance out the "weight" of the building in Shenton way on the left hand side.

PS. korbidp3k #3 photo is also nicely "balanced".
PPS. I can see the road next to the esplanade that can be a nice lead in line for the photo... which no one uses....
