Newbies need help right?

A work senario is totally an inappropriate comparison.

That said, if a new staff of mine keeps on asking how to do this and how to do that, I can guaranty you that this staff will not last long. It is not a newbie or senior thing. It is something to do with initiative, and the ability to learn on their own.

Back to CS, and yes, it is true this is a social enviroment and not work, but, I do often see stupid questions, follow up by more stupid questions. Stupid questions can be easily clasified as questions where the answer is obvious, readily available, and does not make sense.

Yes, one could say, we should just avoid these asker of these stupid questions, but then, why should we. OR conversely, we could say, please dont ask stupid question, or a stupid question deserves many stupid answers/responses.

Why should one then lower himself to "that level" by answering with "stupid answers"? I hope you don't buy that philosophy. I don't really think much of people who give "stupid answers".

To answer your rebuttal, I dont think too much of those asking stupid questions.

On a forum, we comment. That create conversations, discussions and interactions.

We see something funny, we laugh in real laugh, we type lol on line. We see something stupid, we comment we comment in real liffe, so we also type out our comments online.

Actually, CS is one forum where there is a resemblance of more normal human interactions, there are praises, criticisms, jokes, cries and laughters, positive and negative comments.

On most places, soo PC that it really becomes incredibly boring.

Now, back to your comment, I really do not see your point, why so uptight??

i havent been following this threads and i dont intend to. But what i understand is there are many people who think highly of their own photographs and give comments without the intentions to help the TS improve. It just boost their tiny egos and make themselves feel powerful. But i dont mean that every one should give sugar coated comments either.

If anyone wants to post their photographs, they have to bear in mind that there are bad eggs amongst those who intends to give good comments to help improve.

If you have a question you may get a better response when you PM someone in a forum whom you think can help you.

this is like an open invitation to pm you right? noted with thanks!! :bsmilie:

No one is forcing no one to answer what they think are stupid queries, and with that option in mind, it takes a person of certain upbringing to derive humerous pleasure in boorish replies, especially to basic queries from newbies.

hmmmm seems ive stirred a lot debate here.... must have hit a sensitive nerve...

anyway im glad we got this in the open and hopefully this leads to a better atmosphere here in CS...

Imagine I am lost and I asked for directions. "Sorry, I am lost and may I ask how do I get to XXX place?" "Hey, why don't get a copy of street directory? Want people to spoonfeed you is it?"

Nobody should have any right to be offensive in forums, not even Mods. Forummers are the ones that keep the forum alive, and Mods would be out of job if there is little traffic. There is a clear difference between offensive remarks and harsh critiques. Speak objectively and people would respect you. At the other end, if you do ask for C&C, embrace all comments with an open mind and you would improve faster. Its really pointless if you ask for C&C and when someone gives a suggestion, you turnaround and reply "I reject your suggestion". It certain reflect some level of immaturity and lack of etiquette.

In my opinion, there is no such thing as stupid questions. Its even more absurd to suggest that stupid questions would invite stupid answers. A question which is being asked is often based on some level of understanding. If TS' level of understanding is lacking, point him to a direction where he can improve.

There seemed to be a bit lacking in humility, maturity and respect in some threads. Please, do not ask me to give examples " Go search yourself, we dun do spoonfeeding here". Apologies for being offensive here.

Photography is a hobby to many, and there is really no urgency or need to teach me "to fish for life". Just tell me how to get that fish....For God's sake, its a hobby, not pursuing an education in a school and really, there is no need to act behave like a teacher. Of course, if you are serious about learning, then its important to do some research, so that after you have asked a question, there can be some form of discussion when others offer their C&C.

Photography, whether as a hobby or profession, enjoy it, share and appreciate. Most of all, speak responsibly and respectfully. Thanks.

most of the time, the people will help, but some time, there are there are some body asking questions where the information counter or the directory is just right beside them, or the signage is just above their head if there could just look up.

anyway, just to share with you, some of the question being asked here, even we have many past discussions on the same topic, sticky threads, FAQ, still have members asking the same question day after another without a simply search.

some of the members kind enough to point out the right direction to them, some of them just ignore the threads, only a few will tell them should do their search before post, one or two of them may not have a friendly tone, perhaps because these one or two persons make others think that most members behave that way.

if you are active and stay long enough in this forum, perhaps you can offer some helps to answer such questions.
don't need to write long essays, just cut and paste some links will do. :)

Can i ask:

What is the number to Pentax? Dun ask me google.........:bsmilie:

Thanks in advance:bsmilie:

The simple rule of treating others as you would want to be treated is often quoted by less often followed. We want others with treat us with understanding and patience, so lets try to do the same for others.

Not wanting to encourage spoonfeeding should never be an excuse for impolite and condescending replies. Even if one do not mean to be rude, keep in mind that emotion, tone, & inflection in a message is easily misinterpreted.

If we want to help without spoonfeeding, it can be as general as asking the person to search the stickies, or providing a link/search words to where the information can be found. There is never a need to be condescending.

You do realise that that is quite different from asking help on forums right?

Firstly, you have a computer, on the streets you don't have. If you had an iPhone I'd probably ask you if you had gothere and then tell you to use what your money has paid for. :bsmilie:

I wager if you asked how to drive from X location to Changi Airport in a car forum and identified yourself as a local, you'd be flamed too.

This is a very good example. I do agree such questions would raise temperatures. My temperature would rise a few notches to be honest. So now, the question would be how to answer such a question.

I would not attempt to answer how you would do. I would answer this way if I choose to do so "Not many would have ready answers. Please do a search". when TS has read this reply, he would most likely learn and do a search. In future, I am quite sure he would do his homework prior.

If I answer this way " Hey, don't be lazy, go do a search. We don't do spoonfeeding here!". TS immediate reaction would be different.

Edutilos,

I understand its different, but the context is similar.

Your airport example is interesting and its most unlikely that it would happen. But of course, I am sure there would be odd ones asking questions of such nature and would invite flaming inevitably by some. But I would choose not to join the flaming bandwagon.

I am not trying to change how people would behave. Its a forum afterall. Just trying to raise awareness. Generally, this forum does offer lots of knowledge and information and I have been enjoying most threads. Thanks.

i just think some of the members in clubsnap are too jaded. they see the same questions asked over and over again and that could possibly explain their response - "refer to the faq or do a search".

why not leave the answering to someone who is willing to help? sometimes you get different perspectives. i have to admit i actually learn new things from some of the discussions. i am not saying newbies ask the perfect questions. however this forum is about photography and sharing, not teaching newbies how to search.

look at this forum vs other photography forums e.g. fred miranda. the experience is completely different.

The other day someone stood under a signage for toilet, pointing in no uncertain direction where the toilet is, asking me where is the nearest toilet. Well, i didnt answer him "eh open your eye and see can" or "the sign is above you lah". I merely pointed the direction as if the sign did not exist.

Especially when people have taken time and effort to write a guide.

You obviously aren't looking too much around FM... It's the same. :bsmilie:

I could dig out a few funny threads for you..

There are older members here in Clubsnap who are not as adept with the computer, that's not an impossibility.
