Newbie question: Can the VF of the Classic M6 be upgraded?

The soft release is just a gimmick! When you put inside your camera inside your bag, the soft release will always 'fire' the shutter.
I got a 'Rollei' soft release for my M6 but I just throw it one side..it is more like a eye-candy.
Maybe it is made for the sake for people who like to dress up the boring rangefinder a little?!

The 'Rollei' soft release is completely different in design from the TA soft release. Do not be so dismissive of something you have not used; you may find it beneficial to you.

Its easy to avoid inadvertent trips of the shutter: just store your camera uncocked.

I always make it the habit of cocking the shutter in advance..so that I will not miss any shots.
Had also tried TA soft release from a friend and still it got the same old problem like my 'Rollei' one.
Care to tell me wat diff between the TA's designed one and the 'Rollei' design one??

Its the shape of it.

Kinda obvious that it will do just that if you **** the shutter without a shutter lock ya? It's just doing the job it was designed to do. Guess it's not the right tool for you but it might suit others just fine, myself included.

Contrary to you comments, I find the soft release a wonderful little addition to my Leicas. The issue of tripping the shutter in the bag is easily solved by not winding the shutter on the old bodies before putting it the bag. On my M7, I have the additional option of using the shutter lock. But to be honest, it doesn't take a second to wind the shutter and this can be done as you raise the camera to your eye. I'd do that sometimes either with the film advance lever arm or via my Leicavit arm (if its deployed).

I tried it over at Ron's.

I just thought it was quite comfy to trip the shutter. The bite point is not too harsh and it really feels...er... soft and smoother?

Not bad for a little piece of metal.

I'm getting some from Dr Yao anyway.

Thanks all for the suggestions about the anti flare.

You should try TA's mini soft-release with your M7. I find the mini to work even better with the M7 as it does not get in the way of the on/off switch.

A useful technique that is taught by the old Leitz people, and advocated by Dr Yao, is to use the middle digit of your index finger to trip the shutter, instead of your fingertip. It works great on its own, but even better with the soft release.

Place the fingertip on top of the shutter speed dial and keep the fleshy part of the middle digit over the soft release. At the chosen moment, straighten out your index finger. This produces a very smooth release action with the soft release.

Its important that the straightening-out action start from the base of the finger through to the tip, like a slow flicking motion.

If you start from the tip, or simply depress the middle digit, there is a tendency for hand to jerk very slightly away from the camera, introducing shake.
